The lab was filled with the sounds of keys being pushed on several laptops, yet only one man sat there. Rodney stared at the wall, his brain churning out idea after idea but he didn’t move. There was no need to since his mind did everything for him - including typing every single thought he was having.

He knew he was going to die. Rodney didn’t need to look at the brain scans or tests to know. Deep inside he could feel it. All the hopes he’d had about growing old and making an earth-shattering discover were now gone.

There had been talk about ascending, which was laughable. Rodney knew he would never be able to achieve that and to be honest, he didn’t want to either. The rules were too many and he never did fair well with authority figures. It just wasn’t something he wanted, even if death was the alternative.

“You’d think with all this extra brain power I would be looking for a way to make a time machine so I could reverse this,” he muttered to himself before he turned in his chair.

The keyboards continued to work as Rodney squinted his eyes. He had already taken the time to make a video for his sister, telling her goodbye and leaving detailed instructions on what he wanted to be done with his final experiments. He had also taken the time to speak with everyone in Atlantis he actually liked, which wasn’t a lot. Doctor Weir had told him it might help if he made amends with those around him so he had.

With everyone but him.

Out of everything going through his mind, the one thing Rodney didn’t understand was how to say goodbye to Carson. He had gotten through it with Ronon, Teyla, Weir and Sheppard but he couldn’t go to the infirmary and say the things he needed to say. Rodney knew it had to do with his feelings for Carson. He cared about him - maybe a little too much - and he couldn’t bring himself to say goodbye.

Just then, one of the laptops lifted from a nearby table and floated over to him. Rodney grabbed it from where it was hovering and placed it on the table. He forced his mind to become calm so he could write his goodbye to Carson. Rodney knew he was being a wuss but at that moment, it was all he could do. There was no way he could look Carson in the eyes and say what needed to be said.

Soon the letter, which ended up being three pages long, was written and Rodney attached it to an e-mail and hit the send button.

“Goodbye, Carson,” he said to the empty room.

And with that, Rodney stood from the table and walked out of the lab as all the lights turned off behind him. He didn’t hesitate or turn back. Everything he ever wanted to say to Carson was now sitting in the other man’s inbox. By morning, Carson would know how much Rodney loved him and soon after, Rodney was sure he’d be dead.
