Zu Googleberg: Epilogue

Mar 08, 2011 13:40

Former German defence minister Karl-Theodore zu Guttenberg recently had to resign his post after being stripped of his PhD because of plagiarism *. If you ever read this blog, you'll know about this, as I've written about it extensively.

Having also resigned as an MP, Mr zu Guttenberg has now lost his parliamentary immunity. So the public prosecutor is now investigating him, with a view to formally bringing over one hundred criminal charges against him, mostly for possible copyright infringement (link in German only) **.

* Ironically, the present Baron Zu Guttenberg's grandfather - also Baron Karl-Thodore zu Guttenberg - published a guide to academic referencing in 1971.

** In Germany one only receives one's doctorate once the dissertation has been published, in its entirety, as a book/manuscript and deposited in certain specified libraries. So you can buy copies of someone's dissertation if you really want to. (Many people self-publish their dissertation, as it is the only way to get it published, and there are scholarships available to help people do so. Some people take ages to formally get the doctorate once they have earned it, because they can't afford to have their dissertation published).
