Need tech advice, plz

The problem
My laptop is nearly dead*. We need to get a new machine as soon as possible (probably at the end of the month, earlier if it dies sooner).

What I need from my new laptop **
It needs to be able to effortlessly run standard office software - often running many programmes in parallel. I also want to be able to use it for entertainment (e.g. ( Read more... )

I like my lenovo thinkpad. Dells are popular too. And HP.

I also found 17' to be the right trade-off for me between "screen too small" and "laptop too bulky"

Win7 is good. A decent edition should come with the laptop.

Thank you, I'll have a look at Lenovo as well.
Most laptops seem to come with Win7 home premium, which I assume is fine, and with 4GB RAM in 2 slots, expandable to 8.

Any opinion on processors? I've seen the following on similar machines at a broadly similar price:
Intel Core i3-370M, 2.4 GHz, and
AMD Athlone II dual core mobile processor P360, 2.3 GHz
There's also an i5-something available
Or does it not really make a difference?

As for processors - what's the most intensive thing that you will run on it? Based on what you said, anything in the mid-range should be fine.
