Still having mixed feelings on this. It's fascinating and terrifying. I'm thinking the patient is just thinking that if he dies anyway that it doesn't really matter because of his disorder. But what of the people in his life and if they are okay with this.

It is his choice in the end, is it not? No matter how his loved ones might feel about this, they cannot prevent him from making such a decision. And as you have said, live or die, he will be in a better position than he is now.

Any time soon? Hah. I was probably one of the very first to ever attempt such a surgery. Unfortunately, the technology and medical instruments were nothing like they are now.
