The first time they meet is in the summer time, the middle of July. Shige sits by the side of the road, manning his family’s tiny fruit stand for the first time on his own, and misses his father. The old man used to do sit out here with him, telling jokes and stories to pass the time, but the doctor has all but forbid it now, and so Shige is left alone.

It’s not so bad, really; the heat is miserable, but there’s plenty of fruit to munch on when he’s thirsty - and he is allowed to eat this batch, unlike the shipments they send out to local grocery stores, which are off limits. The road they’re set up on is backwater, though, so it’s lonely; the only people who ever pass by are tourists and vacationers looking to take the “scenic” route, and they’re too paranoid to stop by some stand by the side of the road. In all his life, he’s only seen three people stop.

Maybe that’s why he’s so surprised when a car abruptly swerves to a stop maybe ten feet away. There’s a pause, and then the door pops open and someone steps out - a man, wearing the most ridiculous outfit (and the biggest smile) that Shige has ever seen in his life.

Shige thinks he’s a little bit captivating.

The stranger trots over, smile morphing into a grin when he catches Shige staring, but there’s a blush dusting his cheeks as the same time. “Hey,”

Shige coughs. “Uhm… afternoon.”

And then they’re quiet, Shige awkwardly wondering if he should initiate conversation or stay politely silent while the customer hunts through the stand with that same little grin. It’s attractive, on a cute face, and Shige would be lying if he said there wasn’t a slight spark of interest, which is so incredibly stupid, since he’s probably never going to see this man again and-

“Is this okay?”

Shige blinks, shakes himself to find the stranger holding an orange and shaking a bill in front of him. He nods, takes it without looking and manages to gather himself enough to warn, “They’re kind of bitter.”

The man just beams with boyish delight. “That’s the best kind.”

And then he’s gone, driving off with a way moments later and leaving Shige with an empty sort of ache complaining of could-have-beens.

They meet again later, of course - it wouldn’t be much of a story if they didn’t - and Shige learns his name (Massu), his age and job and interests, and that he’s really very shy when asking people out to dinner. But it will always be that first meeting that sticks out to Shige the most.

That, and the taste of bitter oranges as he bites into one himself, just to imagine what sharing one might be like.
