The plastic of a CD is about a quarter, but the behind-the-scenes workers need to get paid too. And those are the people working for the record labels.

ok so assuming that the plastic costs 25c, the artist get 5c and all the workers/laborers get paid the same I fail to see how the c should cost anything more than 2 dollars... even if it cost $5 total to make why not sell the cd for say $10 instead of $15 or is the profit really that necessary to keep the industry afloat?

Either way, it doesn't bother me to pay 15-20 dollars for a CD because I see value in that 15 dollars I spent, regardless of where the money goes.
