The fox also is a fairly interesting Japanese symbol... seeing them was usually indicative of getting a message from Inari, who will assume the shape of an old man carrying rice or a young female goddess...
I sort of caught attention when you mentioned he said the number 9... as the foxes can have up to 9 tails, and each means it is older and wiser.
The foxes themselves are mischievous and the best way to get rid of them is to offer them red beans ;)... supposedly they're tricksters in many stories, causing people to stray from the path they were headed down. Whether this is a good or bad thing depends on the story...

I think a lot of it corresponds with the legends of Coyote we have here (fun old' trickster), and the spider god Anasi (or Brer' Rabbit depending on where you get your stories), but I'm more familiar with the non-Japanese stuff.
