It's not fair that life is unfair.

I'm not one of those people who handles bad news well, and I'm not really capable of talking about this without falling apart, so I figure I can put it here and then I won't have to.

As most of you know, I received my beautiful cat PJ on December 2, 2007.  She has been the light of my world and kept me going when school and personal problems have ( Read more... )

I'm so sorry. It is unfair that your cat is so sick at such a young age, but she is lucky to have you. I think you are making a good choice to take some time off and stay with her.

The choice about euthanizing an animal is heart wrenching every time. I've worked in four different veterinary practices and have seen it happen many times. I've also had to make the decision with my own animals. It never gets easier. It is as awful the tenth time as it was the first. In the end, however, a quick and peaceful death may be the last, best gift we can give them when the time comes.

Bless you. I know this is so hard.

Thanks, Becca. I'm sure you've had to experience similar situations. It makes me think of when racing horses get euthanized on the track after they break a leg.. I couldn't fathom something like that. At least she and I have had a truly kick ass 7 months together and I get another couple days to reflect on it.

Thankfully, I have nothing to do with racing. I think there are enough random bad things happening (like your cat getting sick) that it makes no sense at all to add to the risk by running horses as 2 year olds. I also have a real problem with the way race horses are kept. I think part of why they break down is that they aren't allowed the time and space to grow and play. They are cooped up in stalls all day, completely sedentary, and then for a half hour or so they have a hard run. Unnatural. Not what nature designed them for. I really think racing is pretty fucked up, to be honest. But I'm digressing now, in a big way. Cherish your time with your cat.

I didn't see this post earlier but just wanted to say that I'm so sorry about your cat. I also have a one year old cat and know how closely you can get attached. I read your post and started crying just thinking about it. Your cat is very lucky to have you to care for her; it sounds like her life was going to be short no matter what but you have given her a great life for the time she had.

Thanks Cari, that means a lot. That's been one of the hardest parts - some people I know aren't attached to animals (one of my friends: "...but it's just a cat!"), and they don't understand how lost I feel or how much she meant to me. I sense that you are tightly bonded to your kitty as well, so it really helps me to know that someone else gets it.
