I don’t remember this, but my mother once told me that when I was about five or six, we passed two homeless boys on the street. They appeared to be brothers, and when the older one asked a passing businessman for some spare change, all they received was a dirty look. I told my mother I was hungry, so when she bought me a sandwich, I quickly ran to the two boys and gave it to them.

She said that I was the reason why she volunteered at homeless shelters.

In my second year of high school, some popular girls had taken my Biology textbook and threw it in a puddle, laughing and saying how my perfect marks wouldn’t be so perfect anymore. I was tight on money then, as my mother had recently lost her job, so I took the textbook and tried to air-dry it as I sat in the field.

A few minutes later, the girls returned, and apologized for their actions. Confused, I said that it was okay, and the left, looking thoroughly embarrassed.

A boy sat next to me after that, and told me that he went by the name Uchiha Sasuke, even though I knew who he was. He was the guy that every girl was head over heels for, the one who was struggling with his marks and the one who had financial problems with his brother.

We’d been best friends since.

When my liver began failing, I was absolutely terrified. I was put on the donor list, but the list was long, and it would be difficult to find a match for me when there were so many people who had been waiting longer than I have.

Sasuke immediately went to get checked, and he found that we were a perfect match. Without so much as a moment’s hesitation, he offered his liver to me.

Jokingly, I said that a few free tutoring lessons weren’t worth part of his liver.

And with the utmost seriousness-which was a feat in itself, as Sasuke was always serious-he took my hand in his and said that it was a thank you gift in return for saving his life with a sandwich.

When I realized what he was talking about, I couldn’t stop crying.

Five years, one wedding, and two children later, I still cannot stop loving him.
