Oh, don't even get me started on this topic...

And NPR had a failtastic story recently about a study that showed that an "abstinence only" program can work. There were so many problems with the study (and even more in their story about it) that I won't get into. But the main point was that it did talk about why kids should consider delaying sex until they're ready (not until marriage like most existing AO programs) and talking to kids on an individual basis. Sounds fine, and makes sense. But "works" in this case meant that 68% of the class didn't have sex for up to 2 years after the class. Okay, fine. That's something. How many had sex 3 years after the class though? And how many got STDs or got pregnant? The study said nothing about that. The basic idea of the class sounds fine, but there's absolutely NO advantage in AO sex education. Because it just doesn't tell the whole story.

I don't remember if you were in middle school with me at the time (I coulda been in 6th and you still in 5th) But, I recall an assembly where they wanted students to sign a 'contract' to not have sex until married. I remember everyone in the gym, and a table in the center with these 'contracts' students could (and were goaded VERY heavily to) sign. I did not sign one, cause even at that young of age I knew that was bull shit. AO programs just remind me of the "If I can't see it, it's not a problem" mentality. *lol*
