"Marriage" is a religious term. Some people want it to stay that way, even for the government ( ... )

Churches are private institutions though. Why can't we just let individual churches decide whether or not to take part in performing gay marriages?
That's technically discrimination but if the church has no place in government the government has no place in church. It works both ways.
Plus, I figure because homosexuality is such a heated issue specifically for religious institutions it legitimizes their right to deny service.
This way certain churches could maintain their religious freedoms and gay people could still get married in California. I mean, there were something like 18,000 gay marriages in the period of months that prop 8 wasn't passed so it's no like there aren't institutions that will marry them.

Some churches don't want to HAVE to marry gays, and if a gay couple who grew up going to that church wanted to get married in it, then in order for that church to continue receiving its tax breaks, then it will have to. Frankly, I say fuck breaks for churches. Separation of church and state should be absolute.

I feel like in the same way that religious people trying to tell gays that their love should be forbidden, gays trying to make religious people do something that they genuinely feel is going to spiritually hurt them is an infringement of rights. Honestly, for me, getting married isn't an issue of what chruch I want to be married at, it's an issue of who presides over the ceremony. When you start forcing people to do things they don't want to you are stepping on other peoples freedoms and are thus no better than those you are combatting.
