Kami and Danny were taking turns at working over Marco for information. It was a slow and painful process but Kami seemed to be enjoying herself. Of course she did. She was Steve’s female counterpart after all. Danny had to hold his tongue more often than not during the interrogation. She was actually pretty good and he didn’t want to take her fun away. He wasn’t too happy when it was his turn at bat but he went with the flow.  After what seemed an eternity of foreplay with the fucker they finally got what they came for.

“Fine, I work for Hesse! Victor fuckin Hesse!” Marco spat at them from his position on the floor.

“Now, was that so hard Marco? If you had played nice from the start it would have been a lot more pleasant for all of us. Was it good for you, Danny?” Kami spat back at the suspect as she stepped back to get her breath back. “Sit, spin and stare at the wall. Cool your heels while the adults have a little chat.”

“Steve is not gonna like this!” Kami whispered to Danny as they left Marco in the cell.

“I’m not gonna like what?” Steve asks as he walks down the hall towards them.

“Dude! What the fuck are you doing here? You need to be at home resting. We told you we would keep you updated!” Kami yells at her boss. She notices a woman behind Steve that she didn’t recognize. She gives a questioning look to Steve as she wipes her hands on her pants. She knew she looked a mess and this was not a good time to be meeting new people.

“Oh, right! You’ve never met my sister. Kami this is Mary, Mary this is one of the new members of my team, Kami, my second in command. She and Danny have been partnered up since I have been out.” Steve introduces them.

“Nice to meet you, Mary.” Kami extends her hand.

“Same here.” Mary shakes her hand. “Hey Danny! How’s it?”

“Hey Mary! We were just questioning a suspect. Sorry if we look a little disheveled.” Danny grins sheepishly.

“That’s ok. I have seen worse. So Kami, that sounds like a Hawaiian name but you don’t look maoli. And you are definitely a haole. What’s up with that?” Mary asked.

“Wow. I can see how you two are related. Right to the point,uh?” Kami glances at Steve. “Well if you must know, I moved here several years ago to leave my past far behind me. I wanted to start all over so I immersed myself in the Aloha spirit. I am now kama ‘aina, sistah. Does that work for you?” Kami was glaring at Mary just like her brother does.

“Yeah, sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you. I was just curious is all.”

“S’okay. I have had a long day dealing with assholes. I didn’t mean to snap at you. I’m sorry too.”

“Well we actually have some work to do here guys. You need to go home and rest babe! No excuses!!” Danny tried to shove Steve out the door but he was immovable.

“When were you gonna tell me about him?” Steve motions to the big monitor in the bullpen with his chin.

“If you gave us a chance to process the whole thing we would have called you in about 2 minutes. We just learned about him from our guest back there before you showed up. ESP much?” Kami gripped, sounding like Danny. “We are not keeping things from you on this, promise! Now it is really time for you to go! Don’t make me drag you out myself!” Mary snorts at the last part of that comment.

“Don’t laugh, Mary. She can and will do it. She is the only one that could get away with it I think!” Danny warns her.

Steve gives Kami one of his killer glares right before he looks about to fall over. “Whoa! Ok Kahuna, time for you to sit! Mary, could you take him to sit in his office? I will be right in. Mahalo!”

The rest of the team had been hovering in the background not knowing what to do. Kami sets them all up with tasks to follow up on. Now that they knew who they were dealing with they had a direction to go in. She and Danny go in to Steve’s office to make sure he is ok.  This was going to be even tougher than she originally thought.

Danny goes over to Steve on the couch. He looks really worried about him. “We will get this bastard this time, Steve! We have to! No excuses this time! I promise!” Danny squeezes his shoulder.

Steve raises his head and looks at his partner with red rimmed eyes. “You’re damn right we will! And yes I said WE! I am not sitting this one out any longer. I don’t care if I have to work the case all by myself!” he growled. He seemed more frail and tired then when he first came in.

Kami moved to crouch in front of Steve. “Ok, Kahuna. On one condition. You work it from this office only. You can’t handle field work yet! Deal?” she held out her hand. Steve shakes it.

“Deal.”

They all proceed to brainstorm on the best way to take Hesse down once and for all. Chin and Kono had gone out to check out some leads but those turned out to be dead ends. The team is starting to get frustrated and to take it out on each other again. They seem to act like caged animals in a zoo when things got tense.

“FOOD BREAK!” Kami commands.

All eyes cut to Steve for the ok to proceed. He was feeling very worn out himself. “What? I am here on very limited duty! Bosses orders!” he looks in Kami’s direction.

“Ok then, pizza or Chinese?” Kami asks.

They all had crammed into Steve’s office to eat, which is now strewn with empty Chinese food cartons and chopsticks.

“Phew, we needed that! Now maybe we can think again. Remind me to keep snacks around the office for when we need a quick pick-me up. We all get like bears when our blood sugar drops!” Kami observes.

“I think I need to go home and get some sleep actually.” Steve sighs.

“First smart thing you have said all day, brah!” Mary chimed in. She had been hanging around in the background all day to keep an eye on her brother. And she actually stayed out of the way for a change. “Let’s get you home, then, ok?”

“Yes Ma’am!” Steve half salutes her. Mary just slaps his arm gently and nudges him out of the office.

“Well I know we all need some rest but we all can squeeze more time in here then he can right now.” Kami said as they cleared out of Steve’s office.

They split up into groups to tackle as many tasks as possible. Kami wanted to get Hesse just as bad as Steve did. She knew he had way more reasons than she did to want him taken down. She could taste the rage growing as time went on with no results. And then out of the blue her gut spoke to her, more like yelled.  There was a mole or spy working against them. But who? That was the million dollar question. Who knew about Steve’s condition and had easy access to him? No one on the team would betray their boss and friend like that. It was either someone on HPD or closer to home. Mary? No way! Or maybe, just maybe it was her, but only because she was forced into it somehow. Kami doubted she could betray her own brother like that without a damn good reason. Now to prove it - that was gonna be the trickiest part. She needed Danny and Steve to believe her so they could help her get to the truth. She hated to do this to Steve but it needed to be done.

“Danny, can you come in here please?” Kami called from Steve’s office. She never intended to take it over but it was bigger and had more room for her to pace in peace.

“Yeah, what’s up?” Danny asked as he strode in eyeing her suspiciously. “Why are you in Steve’s office?”

“Hey, get outta my head would ya! I needed room to pace. Bigger is better.” She snapped back.

“Right. Ok, spill it! Not like you to pace. Must be something big eating at you.” Danny closed the office door.

“Oh yeah! Really big and no one is gonna like it one bit. Not like they’ve liked anything about this case so far. But I don’t trust anyone else right now with this. I think we have a mole or spy. Someone close that knows what’s going on and has direct access to Steve.”

Danny’s face was one of shock, horror and confusion all at once. “Whoa, whoa! Who? How?” he stuttered.

“I know what you’re thinking, brah. I said the same thing myself while I was pacing. I hate to say this but my gut is telling me it might be Mary.”

“Excuse me? No freaking way it’s Steve’s sister! No! I refuse to believe that!” Danny protested.

“You think I am enjoying this? I don’t want to be the one to tell Steve! He has had enough shit to deal with on this as it is. But I think if she were forced in some way then it is possible. Someone - Hesse - has something over her head. We need to find out if it is her and then find out the why.” Kami ran her hands through her hair. This case was getting more and more complicated by the minute.

Danny sat in stunned silence on the couch. He needed a few minutes to process this whole thing. “So how the hell do we prove it?” he asked, afraid of the answer, but desperate to find the truth.

“Ok, I have an idea. We need to involve Steve. As much as I hate to do this, he needs to know. We need his help to pull this off.”

“We have no other choice at this point, right? God, this is gonna kill him!”

“We need to finish with Hesse NOW! Or he will eventually kill Steve in the most literal way!”

“So what’s the plan?”

“Ok, so I think Steve’s work cell is bugged. So we need to call him and set up a get a fake plan into action.”

“Wait, if we do that, then how is that gonna work?”

“Cuz we call him on his bat phone and fill him in on the plan.”

“His bat phone?” Danny’s face was laughable at this one.

“Yeah, his In Case of Emergency phone. I have the number, but was told to guard it with my life. Time to use it, dontcha think?” Kami winked.

“Why the fuck don’t I know about this bat phone? Well that will explain a few things. I just don’t see him in the blue cape and ears.” Danny quipped.

“Pfft! No you would rather he show up in red tights and cape instead! Oh, and the giant S on his chest suits him, no?” Kami laughs as Danny blushes and hides a smile. “Ok,now down to business.”

They lay out the plans with the rest of the team. They will need everyone on board to pull this off. She knew she could trust them on this. They were ohana after all!

“Hullo?” Steve sleepily answers his bat phone.

“Steve, sorry, did I wake you, brah?” Kami asked with dread.

“Huh, ya, but it’s ok. Why are you calling this phone? What happened?” Steve sits up, wide awake now.

“No time to get into the major details Kahuna. We need your to help find out the truth. This may hurt but it needs to be done. I am sorry.”

Steve shot out of bed at Kami’s cryptic talk. “What the hell are you talking about? I need as many details as you can give me. I don’t want to go into anything blind.”

“I know, that is why I called this phone. I just hope it is a secure line after all this. We think your other phone is bugged. And we, well mostly me, suspect your sister to be involved.” Kami cringed as she said the last sentence, expecting Steve to explode. But instead he let out a low groan.

“Wow, there must be some serious evidence to back this up or you wouldn’t be calling me?”

“Well there is mostly suspicion and a gut feeling right now. I need your help to actually prove it. I hate to put you through this Kahuna.”

Steve was silent for so long Kami thought he had hung up on her. “I know it’s not your fault. What’s the plan?” Steve finally responded.

Kami put him on speaker phone in the bullpen for all to be included. She proceeded to spell out the abbreviated details of the plan. She silently prayed to all the gods that this worked, for all their sakes. After about 10 minutes Steve heard his sister in the bathroom. He grew quiet on the phone so the crew stopped talking. “Steve, hang up and I will call your other cell. I will text you on this one as we go.” All she got in response was a low grunt before the line went out.

Mary knocked on his door. “Hey, you ok?” Steve rolled over and acted like she had just woke him up. “Sorry brah. I thought I heard you on the phone.”

“Nah, I must have been talking in my sleep again. Bad dream.” Steve said groggily as his work cell vibrated on his bedside table. 5-O flashed on the screen. He rolled over the bed to answer it. “Hullo?”

“Hey Steve, did I wake you?”

“No, Kami. I just got up. What’s up? Anything new?” he asked anxiously.

“Yeah, we finally have a break in the case. But we gotta move fast to catch Hesse before he flees the island.” Kami explained.

“Ok. What can I do? I need something to do!”

“Steve, there is no time. I already have the team deployed to 2 crucial points. I can’t wait for you to get back here. It goes down now!”

“I can’t sit this out Kami! You know what this means to me! This is my team! Not yours! I call the shots!” Steve commanded.

“Not now you don’t Kahuna!”  He knew she wasn’t going to back down on this.

“Fine, you win. I will sit this round out. Just don’t let him get away this time. Please!”

“I promise to take the fucker out for you personally!”

In the meantime Mary had snuck back to her room to make a call of her own.

As soon as Steve hung up the phone he was dressed and heading out the door.

“Where ya headed?” Mary asked as she came out of her room.

“Five-O caught a break so I am heading back to HQ to man the bullpen.” Steve lied.

“Whoa! I thought you were gonna sit this one out?”

“Well they are not gonna stop me on this. I will get back there as soon as I know they have gone.”

“You expect me to believe you’re going back to HQ? You are going after Hesse yourself aren’t you? No way! You can’t do this alone Steve! Please just stay here and let your team handle this!” Mary pleaded.

Steve gritted his teeth. “Why does everyone keep telling me not to go after this guy? He killed our father and a good friend of mine! What if he comes after you next? Do you want me to just sit here on my hands like a good little boy scout? Uh? No! I am going to take Hesse down once and for all!! It ends tonight!” Steve roared. Mary started to cry as he stormed out of the house. He texted his team that he was on the move.

Kono was set up on surveillance nearby with a listening device. They had heard the whole thing. Chin watched from his car down the road as Steve left in his truck and then 5 minutes later Mary followed him. Chin pulled out and followed as far back as he dared so Mary couldn’t see him. Luckily for them Chin had also snuck a GPS onto Mary’s car just in case they lost her.

Steve drove out to an airfield as planned. But it seemed Mary had her own agenda. She had stopped following him several miles back. Chin had stayed with her until it was too rural to follow closely without getting made. With the help of the GPS they tracked her to an old abandoned building that seemed to have more activity then one would expect.

The team met up with Chin just a short distance from the building. Even Steve. He suited up with the rest of them but he was the surveillance guy on this one. He had the listening device Kono had just used at his house earlier. They had to move closer to hear anything clearly though. They made their way through the tropical overgrowth to the building. Steve set up his equipment at a tree line as Kami and the others kept going.

Locked and loaded the team moved with practiced precision and were able to get eyes on the inside of the building. Steve was finally able to pickup conversation from inside the building and he was not liking any of it.

“Well it seems you don’t have the skills of your Navy SEAL brother.” Hesse quipped.

**Smack**

Someone was hit and made a small yelp of pain. Mary could be heard crying.

“I told you what I found out. Please, just let us go!” Mary begged.

“No, you lead them right to me! Just like they planned!”

“No, I wasn’t followed! Honest! Look! Just let us go! You got what you wanted!” Mary pleaded again.

Steve was outside itching to get in there and rip Hesse a new asshole!

“Kami, Mary is being held by Hesse, but I don’t think she’s alone. Not sure who it is but they are being beaten.” Steve whispered into his comm..

“Copy that. We have eyes on at least 2 goons outside.”

“At least one more inside with Hesse, maybe more. Be careful!” Steve growled.

“Roger that.” Kami responded.

The team took up spots outside the building. Kami found a window and was able to see inside. She spotted Hesse on the far side of an open room standing over Mary and another guy tied up in chains. There were actually 5 guys inside including Hesse not 2 like they thought. Great! One for each of them. Kami had Hesse. Danny didn’t like that, at all! He wanted the fucker for himself, for Steve really. He owed him that much. But Kami was in charge and she glared at him from across the building, just like Steve was known to do. She was bound and determined to take Hesse out herself. Maybe she had something to prove after all. Not to Steve or the team but to herself. She had struggled so long to be taken seriously and she had done really well so far. This would be the icing on the cake, if she can take this guy out that is.

Kami signaled the others to move out. They got into position quickly and quietly, like the elite squad they were. Chin took out one of the goons outside while Danny took out the other with quiet efficiency. Kami and Ano found a way into the side of the building, while the others went in the back.

Steve was anxiously pacing on the other side of the tree line waiting to hear Hesse was dead. He was praying for Mary right now. Even though she betrayed him, he understood. He was mad as hell but he still loved his sister.

The team moved with honed skills. Moving in on Hesse and his men by the book. Except Mary caught site of Kami behind Hesse and he noticed where her attention had moved to.

“Well, well, well. It seems the cavalry has arrived. Big bro Steve come to save his baby sister.” Hesse spat out condescendingly.

“Well you got part of that right.” Kami snarked as she moved from behind a stantion. She had her gun trained on Hesse’ head. All she needed was an excuse to shoot and he was a goner.

All at once Hesse’ men aimed their guns on Kami and the team jumped into action. Guns blazed with deafening pops all around the room. Kami’s attention was pulled away for a second by Mary and her friend as they dove for cover. Hesse took the opportunity to attack. He ran at Kami and slammed her full force against the stantion she was just hiding behind.

“OOMPH” Kami exhaled as she hit. The wind was knocked out of her but she rolled back to her feet quickly enough. Being a black belt in Muay Thai helped her in situations like this. Most bad guys underestimate a woman in hand to hand combat. Kami just smirked at Hesse and held her hand out and motioned for him to come and get some. Hesse took the bait. Kami used her skills to take out Hesse, but he was a pretty good fighter himself and didn’t go down easily. But he finally fell to a mighty round house kick to his head.

All was silent for a few seconds as Hesse fell like Goliath after David hit him with a stone. Kami stood and turned away from him on the floor. She found her gun in the corner where it got tossed a few moments ago. She learned her lesson from the last time. The problem was Hesse was down but not out as she thought. As Kami retrieved her gun, Hesse grabbed his gun, rolled over on the floor and aimed at her back. But she was quicker. She turned and made the fatal headshot as his shot went wide and missed completely. He wasn’t getting up this time! Kami heaved a sigh of relief as she slumped against the wall.

The team came running over to Mary and Kami after they dealt with the other goons.

“Well I guess you took care of him Warrior Princess!” Danny smirked as he helped Kami up. He noticed her arm was bleeding. “Shit, you got hit!” he started to panic.

“Relax Mom! It’s just a graze!” Kami deflected.
  “MARY?!” Steve bellowed as the front door slammed open. He couldn’t wait any longer. He had to know if Hesse was really dead this time. He had heard the whole thing but he had to see it with his own eyes. He took one look at the dead body of Hesse and ran to his sister.

“STEVE!” Mary cried with relief. The siblings hugged tightly as relief overtook them. “I am so sorry! Please let me explain?” Mary pleaded.

“No need sister. I think I figured it out, but I will let you anyways just to hear it all for myself.” Steve was just relieved she was alive.

Back at HQ, Steve’s office was at full capacity. The whole team was crammed in including Mary and her boyfriend Gareth. They were explaining the events of the last few months. They had met in LA and had been going out for a few months before Steve got hurt. Hesse took Gareth and threatened Mary into giving him info to hurt Steve. He grilled her endlessly and beat on Gareth to get her to comply. His life was on the  line so she did what she could. She didn’t know what to do about any of it. Hesse was watching her every move. She had hoped Steve would catch on sooner or later. But he wasn’t up to par at the time and seemed oblivious. She was glad Kami and the team was able to pick up the slack and figured out what was going one.

“Why didn’t you just come to me and tell me outright what was going on? You could have handed me a written letter explaining it all. This didn’t have to go down like it did.” Steve asked.

“I was afraid, Steve. I’m not Robocop here ok! I don’t deal with this shit all the time like you all do!” Mary exclaimed.

“S,okay..shhh…” Steve calmed her down as he drew her into another hug. Funny how you realize how much you care when lives are almost lost.

Kami ushered everyone out of the office to give them some privacy. She was all bandaged and bruised; and the whole team was exhausted. “Ok Five-O! Time to head home! We saved the world for another day!” Kami commanded.

“What are we like super heroes or something?” Danny asked.

Kami chuckled. “ Yeah, we’re the Hawaii Five-O Justice League!” she shared a smile with Ano.

Steve’s office door opened as he led Mary and Gareth out. “Why don’t you 2 wait outside. I need to talk to my second in command for a minute.” Steve asked tiredly as he watched them walk out.

“What’s up, Kahuna?” Kami asked as they walked slowly out of HQ.

“I wanted to thank you for what you did today. It meant a lot to me to know you had my back on this.”

“Brah, we all had your back on this! We are ohana!”

“But you went out of your way to take Hesse out. And not the easy way either. Danno said you were a real Warrior Princess out there today.”

Kami chuckled. “I do have many skills.” She smiled as they stop walking before the exit. Steve leans in and kissed her gently on her bruised lips.

“That was for my dad.” Steve flashed his killer smile.
