Joe Meek was the first independent record producer. He recorded bands in a guerrilla style and possible independent record labels. While this is very respectable and all, if he hadn't done it, the somebody else would have.
Joe Meek made record production into an art. He would record in his house, and discovered all sorts of techniques for room arrangements and mic placement. Things like having the singer stand in the shower. Nobody had done that before.
So Joe Meek is notable because he moved his art much further forward, some say he created it, and because he was democratizing.
Also, he was gay and he was a hell of an engineer. In fact, I have a microphone amplifier based on his designs. But that doesn't really make for a good movie.
