Somehow I missed this when it was posted.

Culinary school could be interesting. It will certainly teach you a lot. I doubt you will find money in cooking, but lots of people have taken cooking down their other life paths, such as television and writing.

Don't give up on LJ. It's one of the last bastions of intelligent social media left. Just because the herd is splitting their time between grazing in the belladona field and chowing down on the hemlock doesn't mean you have to as well.

Yeah I seem to recall you being quite into cooking yourself right? Have you been through a culinary program yourself?

Also... you're right about LJ being being a sort of last great hope. There was a period of time about 4-5 years ago when LJ was really fruitful, and I guess I feel like that time has passed, probably because everybody my age is to busy now. Realistically though, I wonder how many people are really "too busy". The time spent on all these other divergent sites is probably comparable...

I enjoy collecting cookbooks far more than I enjoy cooking, but I like to cook a lot.

Facebook and now Twitter are just marketing engines. Their customers are corporations and their product are the people who use their services. LJ provides a tremendously meaningful user experience in contrast to them, but it has already slid far down the slope of corporate sell-out.

Ooops. No, I haven't gone to culinary school, but I do own the course materials for at least two of them. There is a lot to be learned from them. My fear of culinary school is that it will focus too much on standardized skills for being a drop in line chef as part of a cook-mill.

only like, a month late. I too have the jealous. I have an on-again off-again love of cooking. Trying to be efficient at planning meals for 1-2 people can kinda kill it, especially when I am going to school and working full time... As to that, having worked about full time while going to school full time for the last 2 years, I have some comments. It gets harder, not easier. You really have to readjust your life to not existing. I don't mean to discourage, just the opposite. Halfway through when you feel like you don't have a life anymore, you need to remember that it is temporary and only because you made the choice to do the hard stuff now.

The other thought I had was that a lot of people say the food industry is really tough, and it has high attrition. Have you considered trying to change your 'day job' into something in the food industry? Seems like it would give you a lot of useful experience and might help you build connections.

If you end up in Japan hopefully I'll see you there ;-).

well, one way or the other I hope to make it there. There might be some work opportunities for me there... otherwise, just for a visit.
