Flying Spaghetti Monster Hatred.

I think what bothers me about the FSM style of argument is that it's such a childish argument. "You can't prove me wrong so my intentionally silly theory is just as valid as your millenia old religious beliefs!"

I'm not arguing in defense if Intelligent Design, just scorning the FSM nuttery that's popped up.

The FSM has all of the scientific proof that Creationism does- and it is supposed to be silly, that is kind of the point. It is interesting to note that the Intelligent Design advocates have attracted some unusual allies: people who think that we were designed by aliens.

I'm more in favor of the Unintelligent Design retort, myself.

I think that's the point of the FSM, though. Many, many people who believe in ID have the intellectually lazy attitude that, "I don't have to offer any evidence that ID is true - it's up to evolutionary biologists to prove that my belief is false."

So FSM turns that around, saying "I don't have to prove that the spaghetti monster exists - it's up to ID proponents to prove that it doesn't."

Yes, but I object to the argument being applied to Christianity/Religion as a whole, in a mocking sort of way. Which is what I'm seeing.

Well, maybe it could use some mocking? ;)

If no one points out how silly it is to believe that an omnipotent being created the entire universe, then made a snowman sculpted a man out of clay and brought him to life (maybe he used a magic hat?), then took one of his ribs and made a woman out of it, how will people stop believing it while laughing at so many other equally (or more) believable creation myths?

Perhaps a flying spaghetti monster isn't the ideal way to do it, but if it's generating some discussion then at least it's done something good. Anyway, can you really be sure that a flying spaghetti monster *didn't* create the universe? ;)

...it's such a childish argument. "You can't prove me wrong so my intentionally silly theory is just as valid as your millenia old religious beliefs!"Don't forget that every new religion is in this position when it starts...most of them aren't intentionally silly, but they're silly none the less, and they're usually saying not just that their new "silly theory" is just as valid, but that that ( ... )

Beautifully said. FSM is silly because it's meant to mock the illogic of ID. Proponents of ID conveniently ignore the fact that the theory of evolution debunks most of the basis of the religious myth with actual knowledge, instead announcing that because their religion is old, it's more valid. Deserves mocking if you ask me.
