Dean couldn’t do what Castiel had asked. Dean handed the box cutter to Sam and let him do it.

“You sure this is going to work?” Sam asked hesitantly.

“I don’t know,” Castiel said back calmly.

“What’s gonna happen to you when you do this?” Dean asked, kicking at some loose stones on the pavement.

“I don’t know that either,” Castiel said to his lover.

Dean’s heart sank. He could lose his angel forever. He heard Castiel hiss as Sam cut into the chest, making the first arc of the symbol. Dean looked away, staring at the trees.

“Dean,” Castiel said, his breathing a bit labored. Dean looked into his lovers face.

“Cas, you don’t have to do this,” Dean said, now unable to tear his gaze away from the deep blue gaze.

“I do,” Castiel replied, reaching his hand out to rest on Dean’s shoulder. He hissed again as Sam continued to cut into the skin.

Dean’s mind wandered back to the time he spent in the future, and remembered a promise he made. A promise that he hasn’t made good on yet.

Sam shifted his weight to make the inner symbols.

“Cas, I, uh,” Dean started. He ran his hand on the back of his neck. He took Castiel’s hand off his shoulder and threaded their fingers together. “I’m sorry,” Dean whispered. “I was only doing what I thought was right, and it wasn’t.” Castiel smiled at Dean softly before wincing again.

“I’m sorry for the alley,” Castiel said with a small smile. Dean gave a nervous chuckle.

“Yeah, well, I kinda deserved that,” he said before placing a small kiss on Castiel’s knuckles. Sam, still working on the symbol, cleared his throat loudly before standing.

“It’s done, and I’m gonna go over there,” Sam mumbled as he handed the box cutter to Dean. Sam walked away, shoulders hunched. Dean reached down and began carefully buttoning up Castiel’s white shirt.

“I’m used to unbuttoning this shirt,” Dean said with a small chuckle. When he got to the top, he placed the suit jacket and trench coat carefully.

“Are you alright Dean?” Castiel asked, his head tilted. Dean shook his head.

“Cas, I… I love you,” Dean said. A small smile spread on Castiel’s face. “I should have said it a million times by now, but I’m a jackass and..” Castiel cut him off by placing a finger over Dean’s mouth.

“I love you too,” Castiel whispered. His eyes focused on something in the distance and he tilted his head. “They know I am here,” he said, looking back at Dean.

Castiel grabbed the collar of Dean’s jacket and pulled him in. Their lips met softly. Dean cupped the back of Castiel’s head, making their kiss deeper. His tongue prodded gently at the seam of Castiel’s lips. Castiel parted them and met Dean’s tongue with his own.

“Don’t want to lose you,” Dean whispered against Castiel’s lips. Castiel brushed their lips together.

“You will always have me,” Castiel whispered. They kissed again. “Goodbye, Dean Winchester.”

“Goodbye, Castiel, Angel of the Lord,” Dean whispered back before giving him one last kiss.

Castiel pulled away and walked to the entrance of the building. Dean couldn’t watch his lover leave.

“Goodbye,” Castiel whispered over his shoulder before closing the door.
