If you want a black actor, Paterson Joseph--who was high, high up on the list for this round anyway--is stupendous, & I think would have made an excellent doctor. He is on the snarky-side of smart (or at least that's what I've seen of him), he is British, & he is hilarious.
I've seen Ian McKellen on quite a few, and I just think he's too old. I love him, and think he's amazing, but he just doesn't scream "Doctor" to me. Same with Anthony Hopkins.
James McAvoy is gorgeous and again, love him, but I don't think he'd do "Doctor" well. I could be wrong. He'd probably still be better than this new dude they've got cast.
The Doctor's always been a little bit goofy and quirky, so it's also important that he be able to play the comedic angle as well.
I can't imagine Judy Dench as The Doctor, but it could be funny to see her try.

I could Picture a little of Ash, little of Brisco County Jr., Little Of Autolycus, and Jack of all trades...
Ofcourse, his companion could compare his eye with the "bend and snap" from Legally Blonde movie.
