The interesting thing about word rage is that it almost never really is. Those folks who talk about yelling at their radio when they hear someone use less instead of fewer, or who, like Dick Cavett, threaten to "pop" the senator who spoke of his "incredulous" experiences -- they're not really angry at all. Blatant language misuse by native speakers makes me cringe. It's like sticking a sign on your forehead that says, "Hi, I'm ignorant!" or the infamous "Kick Me" sign people would try to put on your back at school. I know there are worse offenses than looking stupid, though, and that most people (at least most of the ones *I* encounter) don't necessarily think misuse or misspelling of a word indicates stupidity.
