Because you can send in a stamped envelope requesting free game pieces, which makes purchase 'unnecessary'. Meaning: you could still play the game without buying a container of fries as big as your face.

ps. Chicken Selects are disgusting.

that's not really a reason, I'm looking more for why do they always do that, is there a law? etc

Maybe they figure that, once people get the free pieces and start the game, they'll buy food to get more of them [?].

but why wouldn't they just buy the food in the first place? It seems like an easier route than writing in for free pieces.

And Josh, I bet there is a law out there. If not, perhaps it is a marketing scheme...

One of the reasons that I know of from reading "No Logo" is that it's because it's free marketing/advertising for the corporation.

I remember my teacher talked about this in my Business Law class in high school. He said something about if you make purchase necessary for a chance in drawings/games/contents, that's considered gambling, since you ARE paying money (whether you get a product/service or not) to bet on something. Not sure how accurate my memory is, but at least it gives you a direction to find out more.
