It looks like someone broke into our apartment today between noon (yes, I'm lazy) and 6 pm (broad daylight!). Around 10pm we started noticing things missing, and then saw that the back door had been pried open

Sadly, I do not have renter's insurance. Anna does, and will probably file a claim, although the value of stuff taken is pretty light relative to deductible.
I did read that they are less likely to go to the second floor because then they will be trapped. But it's always good to take more precaution! This is the first time something like this happened to me and now I can understand more why my parents are so paranoid about this type of thing. Our doors were really not very sturdy. I think the worst part is that some strange criminal was rummaging through my personal posessions more so than the items that were actually stolen. And it bothers me that we may discover more valuable things taken as time passes.
Yeah, that's the worst part. While I was away in September, the rental agency had people in to fix the bathroom. I returned to find my checkbook and all my spare change gone---not all that bad, really, but the worst thing was that whoever it was had been through ALL my stuff---boxes were opened, shelves, packages, etc. It's surprising that only my change was missing.
The bogus checks were a little more obnoxious. PNC Bank spotted the very first one, so no withdrawals, but I still had to change my accounts and everything.
But yeah, it wasn't nice thinking that some guy had rifled through everything.
