in recovery, day 1

after oliver popped out, we had to decide whether or not to get a private room or a shared room. it was $700 total to get the private room for two nights, and you had to pay for it right then and there. after much waffling and debate, we decided to go with the semi-private room (free). the apartment was a mess and more preparations had to be done for oliver's arrival. after getting us settled in the room (which i shared with an asian woman that barely spoke english) and getting me some food, bryan reluctantly departed for home to clean and get some sleep.

one of the nurses came in and gave oliver a bath and then we breastfed (ouch). after that, i was totally pooped. i hadnt slept in 24 hours, so i asked the nurse to take oliver to the nursery for a few hours. and then i passed out! he was back at 3am for another feeding.

the next day i felt like i had been hit by a truck. i noticed a pain in my left leg on the side of my knee. it seemed as though there was a big knot and i feared it was a clot. i shuffled to the nurse's station and they called dr. fong.

dr. fong was unfortunately stuck in traffic because of the gay pride parade. the hospital is conveniently located right on the path of the parade. so they sent over maurice, the OB on duty, and the doc who had taken care of me the night before. a very awkward looking fellow, but i really liked him.

anyway, after much debate, they gave me the option to take an anti-coagulant to keep other clots from forming until they could get an ultrasound to check for clots in my deep veins. i opted for it since my dad had a problem with clots a few years back and is permanently on blood thinners. they also gave me compression stockings and heat compresses.

dr. fong finally arrived and i bombarded her with questions. including... how bad was the tearing? i was afraid of going to the bathroom until i knew. it was then she told me she'd given me an episiotomy. huh. i had no idea. they ordered a stool softener for me, thankfully, to help ease my worries... and my poo. :)

oliver was taking well to the boob, but holy shit, painful.

night number two: wow, not like night #1. he was not sleeping AT ALL. more to come...
