Title: A Million Things to Say
Author: Christie
Pairing: Kendall Schmidt / OC
Rating: PG
Author's Note: Written for the writing contest at my school, it's lamely fluff-filled but I think it turned out well. :3
The sunset was the most beautiful thing in the world, especially when seen from the perfect location. In simple Twilight Town, that place was the top of the clock tower at its center. The view was marvelous, the red and orange hues blending together smoothly to appear exceptionally vibrant. It was so radiant and powerful, evoking an indescribable sensation in those who witnessed it.
There were two who made it a point to visit religiously, every single evening, no matter what. They sat together, hand in hand, peaceful and in awe of the beauty. The young man would hook his arm around her torso, holding her firmly to his own warm body. Her head rested gently upon his shoulder, her unoccupied hand laid lovingly on his leg. Their hearts pounded freely in their chests, content with the silence that surrounded them. They required no words at all in the time they perched upon the tall building, merely focusing on the comfort they found with each other while they enjoyed the magnificent sight.
The girl scanned the horizon, seeing the abundance of buildings looming out before her highlighted by the sun’s fading rays. Clouds floating lazily above the scene were delicately painted deep shades of crimson and apricot, fading together into an intense yellow glow as it neared the sinking orb in the sky.
The boy’s clear green eyes travelled down the girl’s arm, coming to a rest on the ink which stained her wrist. It was his name, Kendall, written in elegant cursive. His mouth lifted at the corners and he gave her a tight squeeze, kissing the top of her head. Kendall then shifted his own hand next to hers, revealing the scrawl of Christie and enjoying the light chuckle that escaped her. She laced their fingers together as she settled more closely against his side. Her thumb moved in slow circles upon his skin, soothing them both as the sun continued to slip beyond the edge of the Earth.
Christie stared, becoming even further entranced by the sight before her. She was a girl constantly wondering about the world around her. How the people functioned, the processes of the environment, the patterns behind the sky and those things beyond it; it all fascinated her for some reason. She didn’t want to know of the mathematical theories, however. She merely loved how it felt to ponder the mysterious concepts of the universe surrounding her.
Kendall didn’t quite understand what was so interesting about most of it, yet he could listen to her go on and on for hours. He’d gaze into those brown eyes and see a different spark in them as she discussed the patterns of the stars and the phases of the moon. It all made little to no sense to him the majority of the time, but as long as he was with her it didn’t matter. He would lace their fingers together and open his ears to her every word, his heart beating steadily in his chest as she spoke.
Christie often related their relationship to the universe. Kendall was the focus of her existence, the sun to her planet Earth. Without him she would be thrown off her path, set to crash around aimlessly in the inky black depths. She’d mentioned this to Kendall once, and he was so overwhelmed that he couldn’t speak. He simply stared, shock and terror seemingly radiating from him. It scared him so much at first, to be that much to her when he himself didn’t believe he was even half that great. Yet as the full meaning sunk in he began to view it as an honor, something in which he should take pride. Knowing he was so important to her made his heart swell and his mind swim with everything he felt for her.
And that was the thing that made Christie’s decision to leave all the more difficult. In a rapidly decreasing number of weeks, she was to leave her hometown and travel thousands of miles away to continue onto the next level of her schooling. Christie was a writer with a passion for travelling, and although she was excited for her coming adventures she was beyond disappointed that Kendall couldn’t make the trip with her. Though they had more than enough cash to spare, his parents insisted he stay and refused to hear out any of his compromises. He knew his work was important, he knew he’d miss them if he left as well, but he also knew that he would miss this girl more than anything in the entire world.
Kendall had tried to block out of his mind how much it would hurt to watch her get on that plane and vanish before his very eyes, the tears flowing down his face in thin, salty rivers as he waved a goodbye that would never reach her sight. But as he felt the girl settle herself more comfortably against his body, letting out a contented sigh and squeezing his hand firmly, the thoughts began to flood his mind. His brain showed him images of the clock tower with one lonely person on it, him, gazing out at the suddenly dull and lifeless sunset with a knot catching in the back of his throat. He knew there were methods of communication, and of course he would make full use of them; he just didn’t know if he was truly ready for the void that would be sucking everything out of him.
The sun was in the final seconds of its fiery descent, the sky growing blacker and blacker as it slipped beneath the horizon. They viewed the last of the gorgeous spectacle, the land below them appearing to be in flames in contrast to the darkness that overtook them. The dim lights in the clock tower hovered over them as Kendall shifted his body to face the girl, gazing into her soothing brown eyes restlessly.
“Christie…” He began nervously, but she rested her forefinger gently over his lips. She knew exactly what he was thinking about, and she needed him to stay calm.
“I know, Kendall.” She murmured sadly, hand sliding away from his face and returning to its nest in the young man’s. Their fingers interlocked perfectly, and her heart sank in her chest as she saw his expression falter.
His soft green eyes communicated it all. Every emotion was there; sorrow, helplessness, love, all rolled into one massive volcano of pain, just waiting to erupt into a downpour of slow and steady tears. Their deadline was in a bit more than a month, but Kendall wasn’t ready to lose her to the outside world. He’d tried long-distance relationships before, and they’d never worked out well for him. It always ended the same. The girl would find a “better guy,” suddenly stop texting or calling him, and eventually forget all about him, leaving him in a pathetic shell of heartbreak.
Kendall really didn’t want to face that again, and though he fully realized he shouldn’t believe Christie would do anything remotely similar to him, that’s exactly what he’d believed about his past girlfriends. She read that through his face and her frown deepened. Raising her arm, she reminded him that she herself had enough faith in their relationship that she’d taken the chance of getting his name permanently ingrained onto her body.
“This has got to count for something, right?” Her voice was full of confidence, eyes alight with affection for the boy who slouched so miserably ahead of her. Kendall nodded, hair falling into his eyes and causing the two to chuckle and momentarily break the tension. Christie brushed the locks to the side, leaning in for a brief kiss before lifting his hand up for him to see. “This, too.”
The silence settled over them once more, though at the moment it was full of distress. They were each sucked away by their own thoughts for a while, staring at nothing in particular. Kendall’s hand slowly inched towards Christie’s again, causing her to look up into his pretty green eyes. She noticed tears shining on his face, dripping down his cheeks; yet he was smiling as he pulled the girl backwards firmly against his chest, wrapping his arms around her in a protective embrace. His lips pressed against her hair over and over again, breathing in her scent and burning it into his senses for him to remember forever.
The couple remained like this for hours, clinging onto each other for dear life, attempting to drag every moment out as long as they could, though not a word passed from either set of lips besides their murmured I love you’s. The time progressed far too swiftly, however, and before they knew it the clock struck midnight and still they were perched atop the roof. They jumped up at the sound, as they’d been dozing off. Hearts racing, they broke apart and gazed into each other’s eyes intensely.
“Our time’s almost up, but in my heart it’ll be forever.” Kendall pressed his lips to hers in an affectionate kiss, holding it there for a few seconds before he pulled away. They stood and began the descent to the city below, each lost in their own thoughts as they laced their fingers together again.
