how to vote

Aug 30, 2009 11:56

Hola folks... We're not quite a day into voting for challenge 9 so it's a little early for a reminder - tho you should go vote NAO! This is actually a reminder about HOW to vote as there are several votes that would be disqualified if voting ended now - AND those disqualified votes WOULD change the outcome. Additionally, I have a handful of borderline votes along the lines of  "dull crop" or "too ____ in colour". SO... a reminder:

When voting for your least favourite icon, be sure to use constructive criticism. Meaning: Avoid phrases like "I don't like...", "I don't think...", "because it's boring...", "because the colour is bad..."

These phrases do two things:
- they indicate a personal preference
- they are vague and unhelpful to the maker.

LIMS are about improvement and learning from mistakes and quality concrit is invaluable to the maker. Besides, it clearly states in the rules (for this and pretty much all LIMS) that the negative/least favourite votes are to address the TECHNICAL QUALITY of the icon.

Example:
If you dislike an icon because it is too blue, that is NOT a reason to list it as your least favourite. You won't get away with just saying: "I don't like it because it is blue."

On the other hand, if you think the blue-ness of that icon is badly done (i.e. the contrast is also bad, the skin tone looks unnatural, the blue is overpowering the icon, the blue is too de-saturated/saturated, the blue is too dark making the image unreadable), that is how you should approach your vote. An acceptable vote would be: "The blue texture over the icon is very dark and as a result the image is hard to make out and is a little too pixelated."

I will disqualify your vote if I feel it is either not subjective or overly vague... but I will reply first and give you a chance to re-state your reasoning.

NOTE: Voting for favourite icon is easier... you can go with, well, the icon you like best for whatever reason. A reason is not required - tho encouraged - and your reason does not need to be objective - tho this is also encouraged in that it may help the maker.

I think as we get down to the end of the contest, it's becoming more and more difficult to find fault with the icons. I know it's hard. I'm glad I don't have to vote. :) If you have to nitpick and tear apart an icon to find a fault, you can do that. You can even say: "I really like this icon - I love the colour and the crop - BUT it's overly sharpened around the eyes, especially in comparison to the other entries. Don't hate me! It was hard to pick a least favourite but Karen made me!" This is more constructive than saying: "It's a good icon but it's just not as interesting/pretty/good as the others."

I will amend the voting post with a link to this post. I will also add a link to this post to the rules.
