This case is assigned by Skinner because of the cult aspect. I’m okay with that, even in the face of missing Mulder. The unexpected pregnancy complications are Lamesville though, for the reasons southoffebuary describes. Also, we know what's going to happen and it's not particularly dramatic, so, meh ( ... )

He’s only been her partner for… six episodes now? It’s a bit overwrought.

Agreed. Its a case of too much too soon. Like if this episode had been towards the end of the season, or in season 9 and Scully and Doggett had gone through even a 10th of what M&S went through then ok, I could believe it. But the creepy dreams are silly. It would've made more sense that he was dreaming about killing Skinner while they were on the case together or something.

I actually think this episode is one of those ones that is supposed to aid the theory of Doggett being in love with Scully.

Oh and I think you're right, I think they did do this ep to test the Skinner/Doggett dynamic for next season. They should've tried out the Scully/Skinner dymanic first - with bonus sexytimez.

This is actually a pretty decent plot, with all the cult stuff and then the idea of being murdered in a dream; I wish Mulder could've investigated it. :( It feels like it would've fit in well during Season 5 or something.

This is the second episode in a row with very minimal Scully screen time. Was Gillian Anderson working on something else at this time? I wish choo_choo_bear still had those guide book back-stories. :P ( ... )

I know most of you guys hate Doggett, but that's some pretty good acting.

I dislike Doggett in the early eps, but I do love RP, he is a great actor and he's only able to work with what he's given (ie: a poory written, annoying character) but I agree, he is good in this ep. Some of it seems a little over done though.

Scully waking Doggett up is a nice, neat way to tie up the episode, but... it's kind of weird that she just came all the way into his bedroom like that. Don't you think that's weird?

Yes it is very weird and I dont know what the point of it was.

I wish I had the answer to that. I blame FOX, or Harper Prism / Harper Collins (publishing house), and the various ep guide authors (Andy Meisler, Marc Shapiro, Brian Lowry) for not bothering to produce ep guides for the last two seasons. Why the heck did they stop at season 7? No idea.

It's something about his dialogue and the way he delivers his lines, but I don't know, he just always ends up sounding like a moron.

Yup. It's like the directors are telling him, "You gotta sound tough. Give 'em hell." And in response he's barking his lines and sounding, like you said, like a moron.

Oh, I LOVE the dream scene where Doggett goes to Scully's bedroom with the axe. The blue lighting and the flashes, where you see a different image each time the light comes back up? And the pulsing sound? The whole thing is just really neat.If by neat you ( ... )

PS:
I just went through imdb and perhaps GA was filming and/or promoting her film House of Mirth when this ep was being shot, thus limiting her available screen time. It's the only reason I can think of, anyway.

This ep is so. eff'd. up. I still consider it to be one of the scariest of season 8. The whole axe-in-the-head thing, the buzz-saw-in-the-head thing, the flashing-blue-light scene... OMG. This is one ep that feeds on our fear of nightmares, of rats, of cults, of drugs, of being AXED IN THE HEAD ... and poor Doggett has to go it alone. No wonder he's so freaked out. I have to say, it's somewhat refreshing to see him go a bit nuts and question what's reality and what isn't. Even in the final scene when Scully wakes him up he's still visibly shaken. Welcome to the dark side, John.

Why does Doggett refer to Skinner as "Agent Skinner"? Isn't he A.D.?

In other news, we learn that Doggett lives in Falls Church, VA. Also, I was surprised to see the return of the ABH agent from Within/Without. He just seems to pop up everywhere. Though chances are he wasn't actually the ABH in this ep. Still creepy, though ( ... )

I really like this episode. It's got a good quality x-file that manages to be interesting even sans Scully. Though, I have to say that I thought the pregnancy troubles were a pretty good excuse to not have her on the case since I've seen quite a few people (including me) marveling at what a trooper little embryo-Will is. I'd say some "abdominal pain" is incredibly plausible considering what Scully's been through this season.

RP did a good job overall, but that scene in the hallway where everything slows down made me lol what with the cheesiness. And why did Scully have to wake Doggett up to save him? If the guy was dead, wouldn't the dreams have stopped? Or is his "higher plane" so high it transcends death? I'm confused.

Skinner says the car was locked from the inside. Um, how can you tell?
I'm guess whoever found him told them so? ;)

And I spent a lot of beginning wishing Scully would come back so she and Skinner could make out. But that's probably just me.

I really like this episode. When it aired, it actually made me change my mind about Doggett. I was very impressed with RP's acting in this one, even if some of the scenes were a bit cheesy. I think he does a good job! I remember being pretty freaked out by this ep and for some reason, I remember making everyone watch it on Xmas Day. Don't ask, lol.

I also love the scene between Doggett and TLG. I love how cocky TLG are towards Doggett... like they think he's stupid haha.
