wikipedia. specifically the caspian tiger (or maybe the carpathian tiger).
there is also a list of mammals that have become extinct in europe, and its really insane to see it in the context of what humanity is doing one continent at a time - the same animals are being pushed to extinction everywhere we go.
there used to be lions and elephants in southern europe (the elephants were in greece i think), and not really that long ago. fucked up.
with regard to this (in part, at least), there are plans underway to reintroduce wolves to the Scottish Highlands (from where they have been extinct/absent since the 18th century thanks to humans) which will have a significant effect on the current ecosystem there; red deer numbers have grown out of proportion since they have had no natural predators, and they are close to destroying many plants in Scotland which in turn is having a massive impact on some species of birds there. There's still hope that the reduction in their numbers through being prey to the wolves will halt the destruction of the vegetation though, but if we hadn't been so eager to wipe out the wolves there in the first place then a dozen or so other species of plants and animals wouldn't be at risk now.
we have the same problem here with deer populations. of course no one suggests reintroducing natural predators, the obvious solution is to have a bunch of rednecks run around with guns shooting things.
