Third episode, what do we think?

I have to admit I found this one silly. The original series did some silly episodes occasionally, and they were good tension breakers, but I question the sense of one in this six episode mini season. It seems sort of like a waste of the little time they have. Though it does make good thematic points with Mulder doubting himself, and his beliefs.

I thought it was an instant classic. Reminded me a lot of "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" (not surprising - same writer, right?) or the meta one that had Tea Leoni and Gary Shandling as actors playing Scully and Mulder in a movie. Or the vampire episode with Luke Wilson that showed unreliable flashbacks. My wife and I had to stop the show at one point because we couldn't stop laughing. The Kim Manners tribute was classy. References to Queequeg and several other elements of the show's past. And it brought Mulder back to where he used to be - and where he needed to be again. After Mulder's impassioned off-the-cuff musings on the nature of the monster Scully gave a warm and approving response that summed up our feelings precisely: "That's how I like my Mulder!" Episode 3 grade: A- (Ep. 1: B, Ep.2: B+)

I loved it! Was exactly what I needed. Finally I got to see the skeptic and smiling Scully that I love again. Overall it was a lot of fun, but then there was that graveyard bit right in the feels. Copypasta from my review: OMG, THE GRAVE WHERE MULDER LAYS THE FLOWERS! Kim Manners! Now I'm sad again. I expected some joke about someone so long dead that Mulder wouldn't have known them, but instead it's a tribute!

I enjoyed it, and I think featuring a comedic episode was a wise choice in term of getting new fans, who might not realize how good the show was at humor. I agree some of it bordered on real silliness, but it was too much fun seeing Mulder back to his old self, and listening to Scully's little zingers, for me to worry about it.
