Wiedergeburt

Six months of her life, and what did she have to show for it? It was a blur of aliens, hotel rooms, hot salty tears and sex. With Mulder. Mmm, Mulder. He smiled at her from across the room, another seedy hotel room in outback Arkansas of all places, she groaned. That was why she was doing it, all of it. Mulder. She wanted him to smile again, to remind her why she was going through hell. She was not disappointed, his lips twitched enticingly and he rose from the chair crossing the room in two steps to reach her, where she lay on the bed, pretending to read the cheesy romance novel they’d picked up at some roadside diner, back in Louisianna.

“What are you doing?” he asked her huskily attempting to close the distance between them.

“Thinking” she proclaimed, skilfully avoiding his wandering hands and lips. How many beds such as this one had they shared, how many had they made love in? She’d lost track of how long it had been since she’d been home, how long since they’d been forced to run and hide like rabbits. That, she reminded herself was not their only similarity to rabbits. She yearned for some degree of normalcy in her life.

She had to admit to herself that the first few weeks had been almost fun. They’d shopped for new clothes, Mulder begging her to buy bright colours and steer away from the black she was so accustomed to buying. She begged him not to buy the tie with the aliens on it, he’d bought it anyway. They’d talked and laughed, sometimes they’d cried for what they’d left behind, but finally they were able to be together. They explored the aspects of their relationship they’d had little time to in the past, enjoying the feel of cuddling together in the darkest nights after so many years of being alone.

She couldn’t pinpoint when the laughter began to fade away, filled by more tears and stony silences that seemed to last forever, interrupted only by their violent and hateful sex. Somehow she knew it had to end.

“Mulder?” she whispered, rolling gently to face him where he had fallen defeated on the bed beside her “I want to settle down somewhere, get a job, have a home” she told him “With you”

For several moments the request hung between them, and although she knew he wouldn’t deny her a fear still hung in her gut while he remained silent. Dana knew as did her partner that despite an initial search for them conducted by the government it had long since been de-prioritised and provided they kept a low profile and settled in a place where there were no FBI offices they would be fine. The FBI most certainly did not want Fox Mulder back in Washington, he tended to cause problems, and Dana guessed that provided he didn’t cause any problems elsewhere the government would be happy for him to stay there.

Finally Mulder agreed “But I don’t think I’ll be able to get a job anywhere, they spread my face around pretty well for a while and Dana, you can’t go back to law enforcement”

“You just want an excuse to sit around on your arse all day” she told him laughing slightly, more serious she continued “I’ve been thinking actually, I’d like to practice medicine”

Mulder smiled “Sounds perfect” he concluded placing a gentle kiss on Dana’s waiting lips. Dana smiled genuinely for the first time in too long and dared to hope for the first time that there may be a life after the X-files after all.
