Moonlight splashes on the wet road. River watches it with a faint smile. Beyond the road lies fields hidden in darkness and little buildings that are indistinguishable from one another in the dim light.
They approach the buildings and Simon leads them into one. “It’s here,” he says.
River’s heart beats faster. She quickens her pace. Inside may lie the cure to what the Alliance put her through. They search room after room.
Nothing.
Her hopes are dashed. Her mind caves in.
Simon can’t fix her.
Quietly, he tells her, “It’s okay.”
She shakes her head.
“We’ll find a way.”
