let's argue about god guys

Dec 25, 2005 03:38

As many of you know, I lack a belief in god. My reasoning is that there is no undeniable proof supporting god's existence. If I was to ask how one could obtain a belief in god, one of the typical responses of a theist would be "faith" (as I have received this response many times). But what is faith? Well, the most accepted definition of faith is to ( Read more... )

I'd like some pre-qualifying questions if I could. I'd like to eliminate any extraneous information that may flow from me, and I'd like to see things from your side.

1. What is your religious background?

2. Do you feel you've always been areligious or atheist/agnostic?
If not, at what point did you decide you no longer believed in god/God?

3. When you use the term "god" or "God", should I assume you refer to the Abrahamic faiths' idea of God (Judaism/Christianity/Islam) or even that of Zoroastrian faith?

4. You're a Buddhist now. To which form of Buddhism do you adhere?

The reason I ask the last question is so I may find familiar ground with which to dicuss this issue.

2. i started actually thinking about it around junior high. i wasn't really vocal about it until college. mostly due to the fact that i moved out of the collectively christian bubble known as paden city, and had more first-hand experiences with people adhering to many different beliefs and philosophies.

3. when i use the term "god" i mean the typical monotheistic "big-guy who made it all" view of traditional christianity, judaism, islam, etc. if people have a "personal" or "symbolic" view of god, i guess that makes more sense to me than the traditional view, but i still see no need for it myself. i'm am strongly skeptical of/opposed to things like miracles, the holy spirit, speaking in tongues, and eternal punishment by hellfire.

4. i'm not really a buddhist, in the sense that i don't traditionally meet with a sangha and i haven't aspired to ( ... )

Sorry, I'd forgotten about this post. Give me a few days or so to formulate a few coherent thoughts to throw your way.

Now that I have some perspective on the matter, hopefully I won't blather needlessly.
