Len had been sitting at his desk for a good few hours past dinner, staring at the essay he was supposed to be writing. The paper had a few kanji scribbled on it so far, but nothing that could have been any sort of coherent essay.

It was hard going from being home, and being surrounded by your native tongue, to being thrown back into the school where he had to squint at signs before they made any sort of sense to him. And it didn't help that he wasn't a strong writer to begin with, either.

A walk sounded good, and maybe a snack. (Curfew, what was that? Just another thing Len didn't care about.) He was still getting used to not having that constant presence by his side--maybe a walk would get it all out of his head.... Was that food he smelled cooking?

It sure smelled delicious... Len peeked into the kitchen through one of the doors. "It's time for breakfast already?"

Matthew was so absorbed in eating his pancake and pouring over recipes on his laptop that he barely heard Len there at the door. Only when he did realize someone was speaking, did he jump a bit and look up.

"O-Oh no. Just...cooking." He gestured widely with his arms and shrugged.

"You cook in the middle of the night?" Len shuffled over to the counter, peering at the pancakes with a quizzical expression, "Kind of a weird midnight snack."

"I cook when I feel the need. Can't really sleep." He gestured to the pancakes with his free hand, the other carefully slicing a bit off his own pile, "Not that weird? Not any weirder than anything else really. Did you want any?"

Len frowns at the display on the plates, dropping himself into a chair with a yawn. "I guess it's not the weirdest.. I'm just used to Kaito's midnight ice cream runs." He rubs one of his eyes, tired even if he can't sleep either. "I'll have some, sure." Except that he'll have to stand to get a plate, wouldn't he? Darn, okay, okay, getting up to grab a plate. "Why are you up, anyway?"

"I guess ice cream is more traditional as a midnight snack but I like pancakes better. Slightly." He hummed and thought about it for a moment, "I bet maple syrup would be good on ice cream."

"I wanted to cook."

He comes back with two plates... and looks at them for a moment, then sets one aside and helps himself to some of the pancakes. "Kaito is obsessed. I think midnight snacks are supposed to be whatever you want, really..." He wrinkled his nose, ".... Maple syrup? ..Well I guess it'd be sort of like putting caramel on it."

He gives Matt an odd look, "... In the middle of the night?"

"It'd be good, I love maple syrup. But I guess every person has something they love and wouldn't mind eating a lot of." He notices the two plates but doesn't say anything. Every person has to get through things on their own.

"...If Al was here, he'd tell me to go bed. Every time I've done this before, I stay up all night." He looks sheepish, fond, and worried all at once.

"... I like bananas?" Len offers, ignoring the second plate. "I don't eat them all the time though. They can get expensive some places." He shrugs. Fruit needed space to grow and some places they toured imported practically everything. That's when cheap food was a godsend--or making use of Kaito's powers if they decided to work.

Len tilts his head. "Then, shouldn't you go to bed? He'd worry if he knew, wouldn't he?"

Matt paused and laughed softly, "I should, but I probably won't. I'm stubborn like that. Once I decide to do something, not much else can get in my way short of him."

"...Or maybe Naruto."

Len nodded, thinking of other people he knew who were stubborn enough--practically all the females of the band, really. "I guess that's twins for you. They're always your weak point.

"... Naruto?" He frowns, trying to remember who exactly that was... "The kid who flashed everyone that day?"

"They know you better than anyone so they know what you're like and how to push you to do something." He didn't think about how Al was missing or how Len was missing Rin. It felt strange to think about it, he just pretended the other two were off somewhere else.

"...Yes." He buried his face in his hand for a moment, "...But he's a good friend, so..."

It was easier to pretend, and to not really think about it. "They know us too well, but at least we know them well too--or else it'd be really unfair."

Len failed to muffle a laugh that bubbled up, "Is he now?"

"It really would. Better to have a bit of equality to it." He ran a finger around the edge of his cup, staring at the tea within for a moment before he glanced up, brow furrowed with confusion.

"Yes? He is?"

"It's our only defense, most of the time." Len chewed thoughtfully for a moment, leaning his chin on his palm and his elbow on the table. Doing that made his head bob weirdly when he chewed but whatever.

"I'm just kinda surprised he didn't get kicked out for that..." That the Kagamine twins didn't get kicked out for causing an entire blackout seems not to cross Len's mind.

"True true." Matt took a small sip of his tea and made a little face. Too much milk, not enough tea. Oh well. He set it down and laughed.

"They have a remarkable tolerance for the antics of troublemakers." He gave Len a pointed look, "Especially ones who knock out the entire power grid for the school and steal energy from people who were just trying to have a snack before bed?"
