Tiny eyes of amber stared in to eyes of blue-green. The snow beneath him had long since melted and his clothes were soaked, but still Gaku didn't move. Inside his heart was breaking for the little creature, but outside he was perfectly still, expressionless, refusing to yield to the cold that had long since seeped in to his skin. He had to win the tiny little kitten's trust, or he was never going to get it away from it's poor dead siblings and mother. It was a wonder it was even alive at all.
He didn't have a clue what had happened to them. He'd seen the mother around before the snow fall, prowling the grounds for food, but had no idea that it had kittens hidden away some where. Whatever had happened did so recently, because his morning jog had been interrupted by the plaintive cry of the little one huddled amongst the bodies. Luckily he'd stuffed some jerky in his pocket, and ever since spotting the kitten, he'd been down in the snow, trying to urge it to come closer to the outstretched hand offering the torn up softened little bits of food. It wasn't the best thing for it, but all he had right then.
It was weak, and unwilling to trust a human, but Gaku was good at exuding a calm, placid energy that hopefully the animal would pick up on soon enough.
Some twenty minutes later, hunger won out and it let out another cry, stumbling forward on tiny little legs towards his hand where it tugged a piece of meat off Gaku's hand and started in on it. Carefully, gently, Gaku petted it's back. It growled faintly, but didn't stop eating, and didn't run away.
Continuing to ignore the cold, Gaku waited until it had it's fill of the bits before very slowly lifting the little kitten in to his hands. It let out a faint protest, but as soon as it was wrapped in his jacket, it calmed and settled in, finding the relative warmth of the cloth better than the cold, frozen ground it had been on before. It even started to purr quietly.
Gaku guessed it was probably no older than four weeks from it's size, which mean it was about two weeks short of the usual weaning period for kittens. That would mean formulas and a lot of late night care, but he knew that was better than just letting it die out there with the others.
He would have to come back later and bury them...
But for the moment he ran for the campus and headed back to his room, leaving the kitten in the jacket bundle on his bed and running for the cafeteria to pilfer some milk and some towels. After returning, he left a quick, accidentally unfiltered message to his sister, and went about drying the kitten off. He smiled a little as it rubbed it's tiny face against his finger.
"You're going to be okay, little one..."
