Historical Notes:
The Shinsengumi were said to have had very strict rules, which included never being able to leave the Shinsengumi as well as strict prohibitions on fighting, raising money, and breaking the samurai code in any way. Supposedly, anyone who broke these rules would be ordered to commit seppuku.
Yamanami Keisuke was a deputy chief of the Shinsengumi. He left a note saying he was leaving the group and went to Edo, but Okita Souji was sent after him and brought him back, then served as his assistant after he was ordered to kill himself by Hijikata. He was also rumored to be having an affair with a high-ranking prostitute named Akesato, who managed to come see him just before he died.
Serizawa Kamo was the original leader of the Shinsengumi. Kamo was not an ordinary name, and it was possibly taken from a shrine near his hometown (Kamoi?). However, he liked to drink a lot and was often violent and overbearing, which tarnished the name of the Shinsengumi. He split off into his own sect, which led the other high-ranking members of the original group to realize that they needed to get rid of him. He was the chief instigator of the extortion scandals, and he was in a relationship with a woman named Oume. The Yagi family housed the Shinsengumi at one point, and apparently one of their sons hated him enough to take part in the plot to kill him. Matsudaira Katamori gave the assassination order.
Though much speculation has been made about these two men’s deaths, it is not known exactly what happened or how much of this is true.
As you can see, it is basically adorable. and kind of scary :)
