Okay, so this song is about Kondou Isami's execution with a side of Okita Souji dying of tuberculosis. Happy fun stuff.
Kondou was executed on 4/25/1868. Before his execution he asked for his beard to be shaved. Priorities. He had been under the alias Ookubo Yamato, but a former Shinsengumi member apparently recognized him and ratted him out, which led to his arrest as a suspect in the assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma and general thorn in the new government's side. He was not allowed to commit ritual suicide, and was instead beheaded. His head was publicly displayed for a while...
Kondou and Hijikata went to Koufu castle for a while, and were celebrated as heroes. I have no idea what the sandbags bit is about but it says sandbag in katakana s o. The name of the army was changed from Shinsengumi to Kouyouchinbutai but I guess it didn't really catch on much, or everybody died off too quick.
Meanwhile! Okita Souji was dying of tuberculosis. He always wanted to fight with everyone as at Toba-Fushimi and other places, but TB wasn't havin' any of that. One time when people were visiting him Souji was apparently well enough to do a sumo stomp, but then he got sick again and. died. He died. Like a month or two after Kondou got killed off.
Meanwhile! The Shinsengumi and/or Kouyouchinbutai were falling apart. People were deserting on the way and during battles, and Nagakura and Harada got fed up with the direction the group was taking and left for Edo. And apparently Saito didn't kill them because he loved them.
The lines about the flashing sword are from Kondou's death poem, originally written in Classical Chinese. I am going to be real here, I had no idea what it was saying (電光三尺 would be stupid phrasing in any language ok) so I stole the translation from here and then paraphrased it. Actually I do not know anything about this time period in Shinsengumi history so i got most of my information for this from that site.
