A week gone by

Jan 13, 2008 14:57

My goal is to try to update at least once a week (most likely on the weekends). We shall see how long that lasts. Not that my updates are going to be that interested but this journal is more for my use than anyone elses.

Monday through Friday was spent working long hours. Classes started on Monday so we were trying to wrap things up so we can beginning preparing for the next start of classes. It is just never ending and we are always busy, which, I suppose, is a good thing. When I first started working at my current job there would be periods of nothing to do, which made going to work very tedious and boring. Now there is always work to do so the days just fly by. I should be getting my yearly review soon but I heard that people haven't been given high raises this year due to tight finances...bummer. I could've used a raise given that we are going to be buying a house and preparing for a wedding!

One major things that happened this week is that I went to the doctor! I'm not very good at going to the doctor. If I manage to make regular visits to one type of doctor than I neglect all the other doctors that I'm supposed to go to. I'm really bad about going to the dentist...haven't gone in years. My mom keeps threatening me that my teeth are going to fall out by the time I'm 40 if I don't take care of them properly. Very scary but I hate going to the dentist. Bleh. The doctor visit went well, no big issues. Except I couldn't see my regular doctor. I didn't like the doctor that I had to see. I could tell he was in a rush and he didn't even take the time to talk to me...like ask if anything was wrong, if I had any issues, etc. That was rather annoying but I guess that I may just be picky about my doctors.

Hung out with wiredkittie last night. We haven't hung out in a LONG time and it was a lot of fun. I think that last time I saw her was at ACen last year! Oops. I guess we just get so busy with life that time has flown by quite quickly before we even know it. We talked for several hours about random topics. We watched Tekkonkinkreet and the first episode of How I Met Your Mother (see my thoughts below). Definitely want to make a more concerted effort to hang out more often!

That's pretty much all that happened this week. I know, my life isn't that exciting. We are still waiting to hear back regarding the house that we made an offer on. If we play out this waiting game then we are going to have to look into living options when our lease is up. We'll either have to do a month-by-month rent or go back to our parents until we can close on a house! Grrr. Very frustrating. Option two might be better because we'll be saving money that can go towards the house. We shall see what happens!

Currently Reading:
I just finished reading this weekend the second book in a trilogy and am well into the third book. The trilogy is called Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman by Pamela Aidan. It's from Mr. Darcy's point of view and fills in the gaps from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. There have been numerous spin-off stories from Jane Austen's works (particularly P&P) but this is my favorite by far. Aidan gives us a lot of insight into what she thinks Mr. Darcy's character and world would have been like, as well as some of the other minor characters in P&P, such as Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana. She also introduces a lot of new characters and subplots that were not part of the original P&P novel. One aspect of Mr. Darcy's character so far doesn't sit well with me. Prior to his proposal to Elizabeth, he does not seem as haughty, inconsiderate, and rude as he should have been. In Aidan's book, he just comes off as rude and inconsiderate but this is the result of his lack of social skills and his attempt to hide his chaotic emotions, not from any true haughtiness, etc. This seems to lessen the impact of the change that he goes through after his proposal Eliza's subsequent rejection. I agree that most of the time Mr. Darcy probably came off as short/rude because he was trying to hide his feelings towards Eliza. I do believe prior to the rejection he was haughty and overly conscious of his position in society, which I felt Aidan didn't show that well. This may have been Aidan's intent but I do not necessarily agree with all of her interpretations.

Recently Watched:
wiredkittie had me watch the first episode of How I Met Your Mother. It was funny but not something I would make a regular habit of watching. Not really my cup of tea. I prefer my crime shows to sitcoms.
Finally watched Tekkonkinkreet (anime movie that Mike had gotten me for Xmas). At first it seemed rather slow and I wasn't too interested in it because I couldn't figure out where the movie was going. However, after awhile the movie got more in depth with its overarching theme of White and Black (the two main characters' names) and Light and Dark. It seemed to me that the overall theme is that Light and Dark cannot exist without each other...made very obvious when Black started to go crazy after White was taken away from him and he was only saved from his madness (and total darkness) when he reached out to White again. I felt that it was a really nice touch when Black started wearing a shirt with the yin yang symbol on the back of it.

Naruto and all associated characters...please refer to icon used for this post. Debating whether or not to cosplay as a Naruto character for this upcoming ACen.

On a side note, why is it that computers never work the way you want them to?! I'm trying to get my printer to work with my laptop but It Refuses To Work! ARGH! I have no patience for this kind of thing. *goes off to wrestle with computer and printer*
