Why is it that I'll send a complete stranger a gift on a whim but feel that it's annoying to remember this type of thing when it's appropriate to people I actually know?

Sometimes when we care, or when we know a person too well, it becomes more awkward or more difficult.

There's definitely more pressure when you know someone well. Especially if that someone is really good at giving gifts.

That, and just the fact that when you're close to someone, the standards of how to treat them just go through the roof, and you're like a deer in headlights. Or, in another case, you're afraid of caring too much.
