Ninja jokes aside, I'm leaning heavily towards a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R for the first 6 months to a year, then once I'm comfortable on that trading up for a 500-600cc model. At that point I may go for more of a cruiser type bike but I think the crotch rocket type bikes are going to handle better for city driving in general.
All the articles/reviews I've read about good starter bikes puts this one right at the top in terms of "new rider compatibility" vs. cost.
2008 model because kawasaki did a major redesign of the ninja model for the first time since 1988. They re-engineered about 70% of the bike improving just about everything people had gripes about with the previous models.
