Summary: Naomi's gone to Cyprus and Emily's feeling lost.

It’s summer. School has been done for just over a week and Emily sits at home, moping.

Her sister Katie has gone on a road trip with her old boyfriend Danny to god-knows-where. She’s happy for this at least - won’t have to deal with her snide comments every morning. Her parents are busy working, which she is also thankful for. She’s not sure how many times she can politely ignore their attempts to set her up with sons of their friends. And her younger brother is at boot camp - probably just where he belongs, but strangely Emily misses him most of all.

Normally an empty house would be a momentous time because she could invite Naomi over. Maybe they would watch a movie, bake cookies together, or maybe they’ll hotbox the shower and fall all over each other against the porcelain walls. She loves having free range of the house with Naomi because it’s a bit like having their own flat - something she dreams of.

She imagines coming home after work, kicking off her shoes and walking into the kitchen quietly. Naomi’s gotten off work early and has decided to cook dinner - lasagna. The girl stands facing the kitchen counter, the radio blasted as she sings along entirely out of tune. Emily smiles and tiptoes closer, watching as Naomi spreads the noodles out carefully in the pain and brushes a piece of hair away with her wrist.

She wraps her arms around Naomi’s waist and rests her chin on the girl’s shoulder. “Mmm. Smells good,” Emily whispers in her ear.

“Thanks, mum’s recipe.”

“No, I meant you, silly.” Emily kisses behind her ear and moves her hands from her waist to her hips.

“Also mum’s recipe, you could say. After all she did make me, with some help of course.”

Emily laughs and spins Naomi around to face her. “You’re such a comedian,” she says, planting what is meant to be a quick kiss on the blonde girl’s lips.

Naomi reaches behind herself and into the sink of dishes. She brings her arms forward and places her bubble-covered hands on Emily’s cheeks as they continue to kiss.

“Fuck off. You’re going to dirty my work clothes,” Emily says, stepping back instinctively.

Naomi grabs a spoon covered in tomato sauce from the pan on the counter and flicks it, spraying red all over Emily’s snazzy black blazer. “Oops. Guess you’ll need to take that off and toss it in the wash, yeah?” The corner of her mouth turns up into a mischievous grin.

Emily pushes Naomi against the cold marble counter, one hand on her hip. With her other hand, she grabs a handful of meat sauce from another pan and drips it down Naomi’s top.

“Might as well make it a full load while we’re at it,” Emily says, her own smile turning mischievous.

Emily unbuttons her messy blazer and throws it in the laundry basket while Naomi pulls her own t-shirt over her head. Just to be fair, Emily does the same and bashfully looks to the ground.

Naomi grabs her hand, pulls Emily to her and wraps warm arms around her waist. Emily shivers and returns the embrace, burrowing her head into Naomi’s neck. Her nose twitches as pieces of hair tickle her face.

“Guess we ought to clean up and finish dinner, yeah?” Emily whispers into the girl’s neck.

“Supper can wait. I think we’re due for a long, very steamy bubble bath first.”

Emily doesn’t realize how long she’s been daydreaming for until the phone rings. She hopes upon hope that it’s Naomi calling.

“What the fuck took you so long to answer the phone?” she hears Katie say and she frowns.

“Bitch! What do you want? And where are you?”

“In the middle of fucking nowhere, thank you very much. Toss some money into my account, will you? Need to fill Danny’s tank and buy some rubbers. Used the ones I brought already,” Katie says, and Emily can hear Danny’s smug guffaw in the background.

“Yeah, whatever. Come home someday, yeah?” Emily says and hangs up.

She slumps back into a cushiony chair in the living room and watches the clock as time crawls by. After Katie’s phone call she feels even more annoyed and dejected. Naomi hasn’t called once when usually they have spoken or at least texted one another several times by now.

The phone rings again and Emily presses down hard on the answer button. “Fucking go away Katie! I’ll go the bank now.”

She hears laughter at the other end of the line. “Hi Ems,” says Naomi.

“Shit, I’m sorry. I thought you were Katie. What took you so long to call?”

“Just been here, there and everywhere, you know?”

“I miss you.”

“Yeah, I know, listen…” Naomi begins but Emily cuts her off with an impulsive thought.

“I’m coming to Cyprus, Naomi. I can’t stand being away from you. I’ll dip in the uni fund my parents have for me and be there tomorrow.”

Silence. Naomi hesitates and then speaks again.

“Em, that’s probably a bad idea,” she says.

“Why? Not like my parents will notice and besides, I don’t even know what I’d go to uni for.” Emily’s frustrated. She hoped Naomi would be ecstatic at the idea of spending a summer away with her.

“Babe, it’s not the money I’m worried about,” she begins when Emily cuts her off again.

“What the fuck then? Oh no…you’ve found someone else haven’t you? You’re not even gone a month and already you’ve forgotten about me.” Emily is getting choked up, too preoccupied with her accusatory thoughts to hear Naomi laughing loudly through the phone.

“You’re a riot, you know that? I just don’t think you’d like Cyprus without me,” she says, matter-of-factly.

“What do you mean ‘without you’?” Emily responds, sniffling and confused.

“I’m calling you from home, Emily. I missed you so I came back. I mean, sure, Cyprus is exotic and warm but it’s nowhere near as beautiful as you,” Naomi says, giggling a little at how love has made her such a romantic sap.

“So you’ll come over then? No one’s home.”

“Of course. Could we have dinner? I’m fucking starving for some real food.”

“Yeah. Thought maybe we could make a lasagna together. Sounds good?” Emily asks, grinning on the inside.

“Sounds fantastic. Mum’s got a great recipe we could try out. I’ll bring it over.”

“I knew you were going to say that,” Emily laughs. “See you soon.”
