Samantha decides not to go back inside. Several others join her outside for a cigarette and talk amongst themselves. She's glad for this and doesn't really have anything nice to say to anyone right now and she stews in her own thoughts.

She stomps out her cigarette and blows out a final puff of smoke.

"Girl troubles eh?" a young man says, sitting down on the ledge beside her. He's handsome, and reminds her of her brother Mark so she smiles at him and nods."You're lucky, you know?"

Samantha thinks about it and knows he's right. All relationships take work. There are bad days and good days and some absolutely monumentally amazing days where she can't imagine spending her life with anyone else. She knows whatever it was she did - or didn't do - has to be fixed.

"Yeah. Why do you say that?" she asks, curious to hear his answer.

"You're all she talks about. My friend asked her about music and she thought of you. He asked her about movies and she thought of you. No matter how hard he tried to get her to talk about herself, all she wanted to think about was you."

Samantha smiles and hides her face in her hands, a little embarrassed. "Got some competition I guess," she says.

The man chuckles and shakes his head. "Don't think you've got anything to worry about. Girl is wrapped around your little finger."

Samantha smiles and thanks him for the chat but tells him she's got somewhere to be. She starts to walk down the street toward the parking lot where she's parked her Porsche and hears the young man yell. "Where are you going? Party's back here."

"Tell Lindsay not to leave until I get back," Samantha yells back and breaks into a run to her car.

Inside, Lindsay looks around trying to spot a fedora but to no avail. She tries to act like she's not annoyed by the girl's disappearance but wonders if she's off somewhere talking to the tall woman who gave her the eye by the washroom. She's always been a little jealous of girls who flirted with her boyfriends but never like this. Never has she felt like her heart might give up if she stood the chance to lose the woman who has changed her life.

She knows she's already had too much to drink but grabs another bottle of something from the fridge and cracks it open. She takes a sip and sets it down on the counter, pulling her phone from her purse. Not that she expects her girl to check in but she hoped maybe Samantha had texted her. She scrolls through past messages and feels her eyes well up with tears.

She reads one message from a few days earlier and realizes she was silly for being jealous. "I would rather still be sleeping, dreamt of u. guess my daydreams will have to do. xo"

One of the boys she was talking to earlier walks into the kitchen and finds her there, eyes puffy as they hold her tears captive. "Shit, you okay?" he asks, walking over to look closely at her.

"Have you seen Samantha?" she asks, finally succumbing to her urge to cry. The boy places his arm around her shoulders and lets her cry into his chest.

"She was just outside, drove off somewhere but wanted you to stick around til she got back."

Lindsay cries a little more and downs the rest of her drink before shoving past party guests and storming outside. She's not going to sit around waiting for someone who just leaves her like that.

Once outside, she tries to remember where she parked her car and screams out in frustration. A night with such a promising start is bound to end in disaster, she thinks. Maybe she was wrong about Samantha. Maybe she was wrong to think she'd found the perfect partner - someone she can laugh with, cry with, just be with and that would be enough.

Defeated, she sits on the cement block and tries to light a cigarette. Her shaking fingers fumble with the lighter. She drops it and it cracks on the ground, leaking fluid everywhere. She cusses loudly and thrusts her head into her own waiting palms.

Down the street she hears a familiar engine boom. But come on, this is LA. Could be anyone driving a Porsche, or something that sounds like it.

She looks up when the sound stops and stares at the DCMA sticker on the small back window and has to laugh. She feels silly to think that Samantha would just leave her.

Samantha parks the car illegally in the middle of the street and jumps out, rushing toward Lindsay. She notices immediately that she's been crying and wraps her arms around the girl's waist.

"What's going on with you?" Samantha asks, her voice sincere and concerned.

"That girl...and then you walked away...I couldn't find you...and that guy said you left...and I just couldn't believe you'd ditch me like that," Lindsay says between gasping sobs. She squeezes Samantha's shoulders tightly, never wanting to let go.

"Aw, come on. You know that I don't want anyone other than you. I couldn't figure out why you were avoiding me but someone talked some sense into me. I would never just leave you - ever," Samantha says, tearing up a little herself. It's at this moment she realizes just how hard she has fallen, never being one to show her emotions. She's benn raised by a professional socialite - never reveal private feelings. But she needs to let this out.

Samantha pulls her arms back from Lindsay's waist but the other girl is reluctant to let go. Finally they part and Samantha reaches into her pocket and pulls out a box.

"You're joking, right?" Lindsay says, her eyes wide and her expression incredulous. "I'm not ready to get married, not even a little." Samantha lets out a full laugh and opens the box.

Two rings sit side by side in the white cushion. One reads SR, the other LL. Samantha picks up the SR ring between her thumb and index finger and carefully slides it onto Lindsay's pinky finger. "I'm not proposing. Just wanted you to know I'm wrapped around your little finger."

Note: Can't have much of a happier ending than this, at least for now. I have a new fic in the works and thinking about continuing my previous one shot. Thanks again for reading and commenting!
