Summary: Naomi and Emily go to a family reunion.
Naomi tosses the last of their suitcases into the back of her little SUV and closes the hatch. She climbs in the front seat, buckling up her seatbelt.
"What are we going to tell your family?" Emily asks from the passenger's seat.
"Nothing," Naomi replies curtly.
"Nothing?"
"Yeh, that's what I said."
"I mean about us," Emily says, turning to face the blonde as she backs the vehicle out and onto the road.
"I know. None of their business, it's not."
"I thought we were past all the secrets, Naomi." Emily rolls down her window part way.
Naomi does the same, only all the way, and rests her free arm on the ledge. "Maybe you are," she snaps. "But unlike you, I'm not quite ready to announce to the world that I'm fucking a girl!"
Emily's speechless - a little offended even, at Naomi's reference to how she came out to her parents - and she sinks back into her seat. Naomi immediately turns up the radio in place of their silence.
"I'm sorry," Emily says timidly a while later. She knows Naomi hears her apology because the girl grimaces but says nothing in return.
Miles later Naomi steers the car into a gas station and steps out. "Pit stop," she says. Emily jogs to catch up as they approach the locked washroom, key in hand.
Naomi unlocks and opens the door, closing it swiftly in Emily's face. Normally the girls would share a shall for the sake of convenience and to avoid waiting time. Emily stands outside the door, her arms crossed and frowns in disappointment.
When it's her turn, Emily uses the washroom quickly and freshens up. She wants to look her best when she meets her girlfriend's family for the first time. She knows they'll have questions - because, really, how often does one bring 'just a friend' to a cross-county family reunion?
She returns to the car just as Naomi does, a bag of goodies in her hand. The blonde passes Emily a bottle of her favourite soda.
"Wasn't sure what to get you but thought you might be thirsty." Naomi smiles quickly, inconspicuously, but Emily still notices. She blushes and thanks her, ecstatic that the girl has been paying attention to little details.
On the road again, Emily reaches out and turns down the radio. "So tell me about your family then. What're they like?"
Naomi laughs and lights a cigarette as she drives. "Nothing exciting. Lots like your family. Very up on themselves. Drunk always. But there are a few I can tolerate."
"I'm sure I'll love them 'coz they're related to you," Emily says sweetly, opening her soda and taking a bubbly sip.
"You're such a fucking suck, you know?" Naomi says, handing Emily her soda to be opened.
"Am not. It's the truth. If they're anything like you, we'll get along famously." She opens the girl's soda just in time for them to arrive at their destination.
"Here we are," Naomi says, turning off the car and tossing her keys into her purse. "Oy, there's my perv of a cousin staring out the window. I'm sure he'll take kindly to you," she jokes, touching the skin of Emily's leg revealed below the conservative length of her skirt. "Hope you're wearing panties," she continues, surprisingly serious this time.
"Fuck off, I'm nervous," Emily says, not budging as Naomi gets out of the car.
"Don't be," Naomi coos, opening the passenger door. She pulls the redhead by her arm from the vehicle and closes the door promptly behind her before the girl can turn back. "Just smile and nod. I'll do all the talking."
