After graduating from high school, Samantha jumped from job to job, all of them mediocre and unfulfilling. In her spare time, she would hang out with her brother and his band and traveled with him to several amateur DJ gigs.

One particular night, Samantha wasn’t feeling up to going anywhere but Mark insisted she come - he had some friends he wanted her to meet. He got right to work once inside the venue, leaving Samantha to mope at a nearby table. It was seldom that she would socialize with anyone inside the clubs and this night was no different.

But as soon as she saw him, she knew that was likely to change. He was tall with sandy blonde hair, bit of facial hair, and a bright smile. He was handsome; he looked like he had just stepped out of an issue of GQ magazine. She is reminded of Brandon and wonders if he would look something like this now.

She stood up and walked into the crowd toward him, panicking, as she got closer. What would she say? Would he even give her the time of day?

“Oh, sorry,” she said, accidentally bumping into him, on purpose. He smiled at her; his lips looked soft and his subtle cologne intoxicated her. “I’m Samantha,” she said, offering her hand to him. He shook it, his grip gentle but firm. The butterflies in her stomach fluttered.

“I’m Happy. Nice to meet you.” For a moment she’s confused. She didn’t ask him how he was. He laughs, recognizing her perplexed expression. “I mean my name is Happy.” She laughs with him, nervously.

He bought her a drink while they talked, ignoring the music and everyone around them. At the end of the evening, Mark packed up his things and found her in the crowd.

“So you met my sister, I see,” Mark said to the man, patting him on the back. Happy nodded, smiling widely. Samantha hoped this meant she would see more of him.

The three of them chatted for a while longer before parting ways in the parking lot.

“It was really nice meeting you, Samantha,” Happy said. His words were articulate, his voice deep. Her heart began to beat a little faster. He leaned in for a hug and she pressed her lips quickly to his cheek. They both blushed.

“You too.”

She waited a few days before asking Mark about his friend Happy.

“How did you meet him?”

“Just at a club I was spinning at one night. He’s a decent guy, no?” Mark replied, his English accent sneaking through. Samantha smiled. “You fancy him, don’t you?”

Samantha laughed, hiding her flushed cheeks. Mark nudged her shoulder, handing her a business card from his pocket. The name Happy Massee appeared in a futuristic font.

“You think I should call?” she asked, biting her lip nervously. Mark shook his head and pointed to the address that accompanied the phone number.

“You should stop into his office. I have a feeling he’d love to see you.”
