Lindsay spent most of the next few days with Christine, going home only to say goodnight and good morning to her mother and assure her she was still alive.

She loved every aspect of being with another woman. She never felt self-conscious. She loved how soft Christine’s skin felt against her own; how the woman knew just what she liked. It seemed like they would never get bored of exploring each other.

But Christine was older and had bigger responsibilities. She couldn’t spend all of her time blowing off work to keep Lindsay entertained.

They started seeing each other less and less until Christine stopped calling. Lindsay took the hint and gradually returned to her life at home.

Lindsay’s mother noticed she was becoming more withdrawn. Aside from work, she rarely left the house. Kyle called occasionally and she ignored his messages. Other friends called and she asked her mother to tell them she wasn’t home.

“Honey, is everything okay? You seem down,” her mother asked. Lindsay shrugged, slouching in her chair at the breakfast table.

“How about we have a girl’s night? Does that sound good? We’ll rent movies and eat junk food.” Her mother spoke enthusiastically, hoping to rub some of it off on her daughter.

Lindsay shrugged again but nodded. She was in a rut and didn’t know quite how to get out.

The car stopped in front of the movie store. Lindsay got out as her mother drove off to run some errands, promising she wouldn’t be long.

Lindsay dragged her feet along the sidewalk and into the store. She didn’t feel like being here; anywhere, for that matter. There were no movies that caught her eye. All she wanted was to be back in bed, sleeping away her existence.

She stood in front of a display of her own movies; ironically, this didn’t make her feel any better.

“I knew I recognized your face from somewhere,” said a voice to her left. She turned, embarrassed and also flattered to be recognized.

Anna.

“You’re back.” The girl nodded, smiling. “I thought you only came to visit once a year?”

Anna shrugged, picking up a copy of Parent Trap, staring a much younger Lindsay in the face. “Something…or someone made me want to come back.”

“Oh,” Lindsay said, sounding dejected. Anna laughed.

“I mean you, silly.” Lindsay blushed and walked further down the aisle. It felt strange to have herself times two staring back from each movie cover.

“How long were you planning to stay?” Lindsay asked, pretending to read the backside of a movie box, when in fact she couldn’t look away from Anna. The moment felt surreal.

“As long as it took, I guess. I had no idea how to get a hold of you.” Lindsay blushed again, placing the movie back in its spot on the shelf.

“I’m sorry for how I acted last time. I was just scared.” Anna shrugged, still smiling. The sparks between them were still there - now more than ever.

“Do you want to come watch a movie? With me and my mom?” Lindsay asked, knowing she’d kick herself later if she walked away from the woman again. Anna nodded bashfully and helped Lindsay pick out an armful of movies.

Lindsay introduced Anna to her mother as a friend from out of town. The ride home was quiet, but both girls couldn’t stop smiling at each other in the side view mirror.

After the first two movies, Lindsay noticed her mother had fallen fast asleep in her reclining chair. Anna sat beside her, cross-legged and concentrated on the movie. Bravely, she reached out her hand and took hold of Anna’s thumb. The woman smiled and slid her fingers between Lindsay’s.

When Lindsay opened her eyes, the sun was shining brightly through the window and an empty blue screen appeared on the TV. Anna was curled up closely behind her on the couch, their backs to each other. She nudged her awake.

“Hey, I guess we fell asleep.”

Anna rolled over and let out a groggy grunt; then she smiled.

“What?” Lindsay said, looking confused.

Anna licked her dry lips and swallowed before speaking. “I like waking up to you.” She kissed Lindsay softly, brushing her thumb against the girl’s freckled cheek.

Lindsay didn’t want to stop kissing her. She was afraid if she did, she would find this was all a dream. No movies, no sleepover - no Anna.
