As soon as the plane lands at her destination, Samantha checks for messages. Nothing. She knows Lindsay is likely busy; sleeping or out with her friends. But, regardless, she can’t get the girl off her mind.

She forces herself to put the phone back in her pocket. Don’t call yet, she tells herself, you’ve hardly been gone 3 hours.

She checks her phone again when she gets to her hotel room. Still nothing.

She checks it when she gets to the club she’s been contracted to spin at. Still nothing.

She’s distracted at work and hates it because she has forgotten what it feels like to miss someone so much.

Halfway through her gig, she sneaks out for a cigarette and her phone rings. She answers sounding bored as she flicks her lighter.

“Hey, you’re safe and sound, I guess,” Lindsay says. Samantha smiles.

“Yeah. I was going to text you, but, uh, I wasn’t sure if you’d be busy or not. I didn’t want to bug.” She puffs at the cigarette between her lips and closes her eyes. She wonders where Lindsay is, what is she doing. She imagines the girl sitting on her bed, painting her toenails and holding the phone between her jaw and shoulder.

Lindsay giggles. “I thought the same thing. Just wanted to make sure you got in okay. I should go though; this is likely costing you.”

“No, no,” Samantha protests, becoming physically anxious. “We can talk for a bit longer. I’m just out having a smoke. What have you been up to?”

“Sitting around. Caddy says hi,” the girl says, giggling. She puts the phone in front of the dog’s muzzle and the stout bulldog sniffs excitedly as she listens to Samantha speak.

Samantha sighs, smiling. “I miss you,” she says.

“Caddy, mommy misses you,” Samantha hears Lindsay say, away from the phone.

“I mean, I miss you, Linds,” Samantha says, chewing on her bottom lip as she blows a cloud of smoke from her mouth.

Lindsay giggles. “Oh. Well, I miss you too.”

They don’t speak for a while; they just listen to each other breathe. Samantha can hear Lindsay laughing at the playful dogs in the background. She wishes she was there to play too.
“I should go,” Samantha says quickly, stomping out her cigarette.

“Sure, you’ve got work to do,” Lindsay says, trying to sound positive.

Samantha nods to herself. “Call me before you go to sleep.”

“What if you’re still at work, or you’re sleeping?”

“Doesn’t matter. I want to say goodnight to you.” Samantha leans against a wall. The music is so loud that the building is shaking. It’s making her tired and she knows she has to get back inside.

“Yeah?” Lindsay asks, grinning to herself.

“Yeah,” Samantha says, about to hang up.

“Samantha…?” she hears Lindsay say, timidly.

“Yeah?”

“I wish you weren’t so far away.” Samantha’s heart swells. She thinks about bailing on her gig to jump right on a plane and go back to LA.

“I won’t be, for long. “

She hangs up the phone and goes back inside. She isn’t so distracted this time but she repeats the conversation in her head once or twice; it helps her focus.

The night is winding down. It’s nearly time for her to pack up her gear and go. Her watch reads 3 AM and Lindsay still hasn’t called. She wonders if the girl fell asleep, and that’s why. She won’t call and wake her; instead she’ll wait until morning.

She lugs her heavy bag out to the car and is chauffeured away back to her hotel.

She turns out the lights and snuggles in to her covers when the phone rings. “Hello?”

“Were you sleeping?” Lindsay asks.

“Not quite, but heading that way,” Samantha says, smiling. She curls onto her side and holds tightly to a pillow. “But you should be sleeping.”

“I will be soon. I just wanted to say goodnight to you.” The girl yawns.

Samantha smiles. “Goodnight, babe. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Lindsay’s breath is even now; Samantha can tell she’s sleeping. She goes to hang up but decides against it. She sets the open phone on the pillow next to her and listens closely to Lindsay as she sleeps.

If she can’t be there with her, this is the next best thing.
