Lindsay’s fingers press as deep as they can go, brushing against tender spots inside. Samantha breathes heavily, her knuckles white as she clutches articles of clothing between her fingers.

She doesn’t want the girl to stop but she already feels like she can’t take anymore - like she’s already going to burst. She wonders if it’s because of all the time that’s passed. She admits to herself that she’s thought about this moment since the last time she and Lindsay were together - the actual experience far surpasses how she imagined it would be.

Lindsay flattens her torso against Samantha’s, leaving quick kisses across her neck and along her jaw. The woman’s lips are parted breathlessly; Lindsay matches this with her own mouth, dragging her pointed tongue along the inside of Samantha’s bottom lip.

She presses her stomach against the back of her hand, holding her long fingers in place as she kisses the woman.

“Don’t…st-st-stop…” Samantha stutters out just as Lindsay begins to rock herself forward.

The woman curls her toes much like her fingers, pulling strewn dresses with her. As the two move back and forth at the same time, Samantha lifts a white sweater from beneath her and places a piece of its sleeve between her teeth.

Lindsay kisses behind her ear gently, flicks her tongue against the woman’s earlobe. Her fingers move more quickly; Samantha whispers to the girl but her sentences are incoherent and broken by gasping moans.

As Samantha lets out a long muffled groan, the soft material clenched between her teeth quiets her usual volume.

Lindsay collapses on top of her, both of their chests heaving together, trying to catch their breath.

Lying there together, they intertwine their heavy limbs. Neither of them speaks for lack of words to fit the power of the moment. Lindsay is the first to fall asleep, her head resting in the space between Samantha’s neck and shoulder.

The next morning, the girl wakes up in bed and slowly peels her eyes open. They are dry and sore as she rubs them. She smiles, stretches out on her back and moans a satisfied sigh. Her shoulder hurts from falling asleep on the hardwood floor in the closet; she vaguely remembers being carried to bed.

Something’s missing.

Where’s Samantha?

She panics.

Was it all a dream? Or did Samantha get scared and leave without saying a word?

A scuffle of dog feet - Monroe?

Music playing - did she leave the TV on?

A voice singing along - definitely Samantha.

She lies back down, closes her eyes and smiles. She feels something tug on her feet through the blankets.

“Hey lazy, get your butt out of bed and come eat some breakfast!” Samantha says.

Lindsay giggles and opens her eyes. Samantha is back in her underwear but covered by a long apron. She dances around in it, spinning in a circle to show the girl a full view. Lindsay bursts into a fit of laughter. “You can cook?”

Samantha puts her hands on bare hips. “I took lessons, thank you very much. Besides, I’m pretty sure your frying pan was still wrapped in plastic. I assume you’ve never used it.”

Lindsay sits up and sticks her tongue out playfully. “It’s new - I just bought it.”

Samantha reaches out her hand and helps the girl out of bed and to her feet. “Not new anymore.”

Lindsay walks closely behind the woman, both of her arms wrapped around one of Samantha’s.

A feast is spread across the table; fresh fruit, toast, eggs, bacon, and two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice - one partly empty.

Samantha smiles sheepishly. “I already ate a little. You slept longer than I expected.”

Lindsay can’t stop grinning. It’s been so long since someone did anything this thoughtful for her. She pulls Samantha closer by the front of her apron and then places both hands on the woman’s face. “You are incredible.”

Samantha rubs her nose against the girl’s and scrunches up her face adorably. “Nope. Just hungry.”

She pulls out Lindsay’s chair for her and serves her up a plate of delicious food. She sits down next to her and takes a sip of orange juice.

“I’m never gonna be able to eat this,” Lindsay says, staring wide-eyed at the heap of food on her plate.

Samantha picks up a fork, scoops a mouthful of eggs up and into Lindsay’s mouth. She does the same to feed herself. They smile at each other.

Monroe and Cadillac sit nearby, side-by-side, watching the girls feed each other. They both whimper in unison.

Lindsay feeds Samantha a piece of juicy cantaloupe; the woman takes it into her mouth as well as Lindsay’s finger. She bites it gently; Lindsay giggles and pulls her hand away.

Cadillac whines, looking at her new friend Monroe. They waddle away together - it could be a long wait with all this cuteness. Might as well go chew on a slipper or something.

“I’m glad you stayed,” Lindsay says, resting her head on the woman’s shoulder.

Samantha rests her head on top of Lindsay’s. “Mmm…me too.” She sets a hand on her full stomach and closes her eyes.

“Do you really think we need to take things slow?” Lindsay asks after a long pause.

Samantha laughs and looks at the girl. “It’s a little late to be worrying about that, don’t you think?”

Lindsay opens her mouth to say something but hesitates and decides against it.

“We couldn’t take things slow the first time around, so there’s no point trying this time.”

Lindsay forces a smile. Samantha looks at her concerned.

“What are you thinking about?”

The girl’s expression looks pained. Samantha takes both of Lindsay’s hands in her own.

“You can talk to me about anything, you know that.” Lindsay nods and stares the woman directly - intensely - in the eye.

“Samantha, will you marry me?”
