csifreak90 Samantha finishes her lunch and kisses Lindsay goodbye. She checks on Attikus in the backseat and finds him sound asleep before climbing into the driver’s seat of her car.
“So what have you two got planned for the rest of the day?” Lindsay asks, leaning into Samantha’s open car window.
Samantha shrugs. “Just hanging out. Maybe a nap later; I could probably use one as much as he does.” She smiles and blows her girl a kiss before driving off the lot.
Realizing she has the situation completely under control, Samantha begins planning a busy afternoon for herself and Attikus. They stop first at a little warehouse that sells Samantha’s favourite shoes. While looking around, the baby reaches out and grabs hold of a pair of shoelaces, clearly fascinated by the bright colours. “You like those huh?” Samantha coos, making it her goal to design a line of baby Supras before she and Lindsay have kids. After all, even the tiniest feet need decent kicks
Their next stop is at a clothing store owned by a friend of Samantha’s. She struts inside, baby seat in tow. Her friend smiles and does a double take.
“When did you have a kid?” he asks.
Samantha laughs, shakes her head and puts a quieting finger to her lips. “He’s Nicole’s. Just chilling with auntie today.” The woman smiles proudly and lifts the baby seat onto the counter.
She scoops Attikus into her arms and browses the store with him. He looks curiously at everything, his eyes wide and bright. As she thumbs through a rack of vintage band t-shirts, the baby reaches out his hand and latches onto the sleeve of one. Samantha laughs and pulls the shirt out for a better look.
“Guns N Roses, huh? You’ve got good taste, little guy.” The tee is one Samantha already has in her own collection, of course, but she buys it anyways and wraps Attikus in it. She giggles at the sight of him. “You’ll grow into it.”
Feeling tired, Samantha says goodbye to her friend and decides to head back home after making a quick stop at a bookstore.
She carries Attikus inside in one arm and a handful of parenting books in the other.
After feeding and burping the baby, she swaddles him in the oversized GnR t-shirt and lays him down in a bassinet beside her own bed. She doesn’t intend to fall asleep but does, with her arm draped protectively over the baby’s bed.
Lindsay arrives home from work around 7 and calls out to Samantha, having seen her car parked in the garage when she drove past. When she gets no response, she wanders into the bedroom. She spies the sleeping pair, and tiptoes across the floor to join Samantha in bed. She wraps her arms around the woman’s waist from behind and snuggles in close, sighing happily.
Samantha stirs awake and immediately sits up to check on the baby. “Oh man. I didn’t mean to fall asleep. Great babysitter, huh?” Knowing Attikus is safe and still asleep, Samantha lays back down and wiggles into Lindsay’s arms again.
“Mm. I think you’re doing a great job.” Lindsay nuzzles in, closing her eyes. She’s exhausted from a jam-packed day at work and begins to doze off immediately.
Having already slept for a good part of the afternoon, Samantha lays with her eyes open, enjoying the quiet and intimacy. She begins to imagine doing this one-day with her own child asleep beside them.
Once she is sure the girl has fallen asleep, she slowly removes herself from the girl’s hold and heads toward the kitchen. She starts to cook dinner; a familiar gurgle comes from the bedroom and she knows this means Attikus has woken up.
Cradling the baby in her arms, she carries him to the living room and rests him on her lap. She watches some recorded shows and waits for dinner, most of her attention directed at the baby and his wacky facial expressions.
The doorbell rings; she takes the baby to answer it, resting him comfortably on her hip. I could get used to this, she thinks.
Nicole waits on the other side of the door, ecstatic to see her baby boy after what seemed like a long day apart. She scoops him from Samantha’s arms; he nuzzles into his mother and coos happily. Samantha is glad to see mother and child reunited but feels suddenly empty - like she’s missing a vital piece of something. She feels important when she has a little being to care for.
“So how was he?” Nicole asks, tickling Attikus’s soft tummy.
Samantha smiles as the baby laughs. She hands Nicole the Guns N Roses t-shirt hanging on her shoulder. “He was great. I told him he’d grow into this.”
Nicole chuckles and wraps her free arm around Samantha’s neck for a hug. “You’re the best. Thank you so much. Is all his stuff inside?”
Samantha nods and invites her friend into the house to collect the baby’s things. It doesn’t occur to her that she should worry until she spies Lindsay’s strappy sandals under a hallway bench. Nicole’s influence on their break-up was sizeable; she knew the woman was just looking out for her. But while Samantha remained on at least friendly terms with the formerly reckless redhead during their time apart, Nicole could never seem to shake the selfish Lindsay image from her mind.
Quickly, Samantha grabs the bassinet and closes the bedroom door. She hopes Lindsay will stay sleeping for a while longer. With baby Attikus’s young ears in the house, this is no time for confrontation.
