i feel like i should post here again lately. or at least cross-post with myspace. or choose one or the other. well, today i choose livejournal. rob and i are off to the gene siskel film center to see a slovakian film. last weekend we saw the latvian film selection, "the dark deer", and it was pretty wonderful. i'm excited to hear the slovakian

By the way, do you speak/read Slovakian, or Polish, or any of the Slavic languages?

no, unfortunately i do not speak any slavic languages. =( US schooling is very bad in the sense that more foreign language study is not strictly enforced. therefore, i have a few years of spanish and a few years of french under my belt. however, since there are a great variety of immigrants in chicago, a lot of slavic language is seen/heard on a daily basis. my boyfriend speaks latvian, so i am slowly picking up bits of that, along with the german i am attempting to learn. yes, i should've been more adamant about studying a language in full while i was in university (my college offerred lithuanian, too! damn..), but there just wasn't time with all the art courses i had to take. unless of course, i wanted to be in university for more than 4 years. i would really like to learn polish though; even though its harder, i'd like to devote my post-university time to learning languages...and making art, of course.

As far as I know, though I don't speak any Lithanian or Latvian, Baltic languages are closely related to Slavic. So maybe picking up some Latvian will slightly help you in your future learning of Polish. But still that won't be easy (I hope my words are not gonna scare you :) )- as Polish is considered to be one of the most difficult European languages to learn for anyone whose first language is not Slavic.

rob has a lot of records, and once he bought this 'how to learn polish' record that was from the 1950's or 60's. we listened and tried to learn what was basically traveller's polish, but to no avail. baltic languages are sort of funny because latvian has a lot in common with german, and latvian and lithuanian are slightly similar but lithuanian has more syllables and longer endings to words. apparently lithuanian is most closely related to sanskrit than anything else. and then estonian is totally different, being from the finno-ugric language branch. will i ever learn polish? haha, very unlikely, but i can pretend like i am trying...
