I'm looking for a new Mac LJ client because Phoenix has crashed on me and eaten a large entry one too many times. I'm trying out XJournal and iJournal but haven't got a favorite yet ( Read more... )

No guarantees, but I'll take a look at these when I get home.

Could you also look at the bug involving Spaces in Leopard where if you log into your account from a different space than where the application is open, the login progress bar window will remain stuck in whatever space that was.

I've had to turn off the auto-login to get around that.

I saw your posts both on iJournal and xJournal communities. I'll admit that for the last year (maybe longer), I've just been using the web interface ( ... )

The thing with the web interface... you can't save posts in progress. I don't do this often, to be sure, but I do do it. I also keep multiple windows open at a time for entries I'm working on piecemeal, as well as an entry that basically functions as a notepad without me having to run a separate program (currently it has my to-do list, my holiday gift list, a list of publications I'm working on, and a few other things.) And the web client can get freaky about your posting time IIRC, because it doesn't auto-update to the time you hit "post".

It really is depressing about the Mac clients. I have loved Phoenix for a long, long time (been using it since 2001) but the random crashes ate just a few too many lengthy entries and I threw up my hands since thorshammer promised an update last fall and never made one.

Good to know about the Firefox addons though, thanks. Are there ways to auto-insert links and images? I'm perfectly capable of typing out the html but having a keyboard workaround is so much faster.

I'm rather fond of xJournal, and have got used to its idiosyncrasies. For me, the advantages, such as saving named files in folders, html preview, and the History browser, are so useful as to be worthwhile.

Good to know. Unfortunately having counter-intuitive link-building tools is guaranteed to make me grit my teeth multiple times a day.

On your second point. First page of preferences, near the bottom. "Show confirmation of successful posting." Untick this and you won't get the "Posting Succeeded" dialog.

Also this leaves the entry window open after posting, however changing the selected journal and trying to post to another journal won't work. I'll look into this, but in the mean time that should let you cross-post by copying the content to another entry window.

Done. I'll release an update later tonight, hopefully with a few other things thrown in.

For me, Xjournal only marginally edges out iJournal in usefulness. And that's after I've modified the .nib for the main window so it's not so top heavy.

The real problem though is that neither of these clients are in active development anymore. They're abandonware. They haven't changed in any significant way in years.
