One of the problems with being obsessed with music is that I often get sidetracked by whatever my new favorite thing is.

For example, my current new obsession is Glitch Hop. You'll want some good speakers if you click that link ( Read more... )

I've been stuck on No Compassion for a couple of weeks now. I don't know what the deal is, but I NEED TO LISTEN TO IT.

See, I feel like that all the time. I've learned that I'm just way more into music than most people. I remember as a child I tried to get my friends to sit down and listen to The B-52s first album. They couldn't care less and just wanted to go back to playing with Transformers. I couldn't understand it. Even now, I'm kinda of shocked when people aren't entranced by the music, but I've mostly stopped trying to push it on people.

I respect that -- I certainly don't feel that way always.
I was really bad at music when I was a kid -- I just went with novelty music or whatever I'd heard before. I'm still learning, really.

A lot of the hip-hop that came out in that period is very good because it focused on clever rhymes and solid beats. That's when rap was trying hard to be seen as an art. Young MC's album was very commercial, but it was still good.

Then hip-hop said, "Fuck it, let's make money". Gangsta rap took over, then the post gangsta period, featuring such diverse talent as Ja Rule, Nas, P. Diddy, and Kanye West. Now I love me some Gangsta rap, but it didn't do a lot to move the genre forward, and everything since has been a waste. Actually, that's a lie. There have been some excellent beats created, but we have the worst rappers alive at the top these days. I mean, all you have to do is put on a 50 Cent CD and imagine it without the beat. That guy couldn't rap his way out of a paper bag! He's so bad!

I thought Nas in particular had some great music. Didn't much care for the lyrics, but I really enjoyed the beats and was happy that they weren't simply ganked from other artists. *cough*Diddy*cough*

See, that's the problem with current hip-hop. I think that musically, it's some of the best that has ever been made, but the actual rapping is terrible. Bad lyrics and no vocal talent. I would love to see these guys in a rap battle with L.L. Cool J or Grandmaster Flash or DJ Run. They just couldn't hang. Their rapping doesn't have any charisma. It's a monotone, mush-mouth mess a lot of the time, and has been since Diddy hit it big.
