I watched Deadwood: Season 1, disk 1 today. The first two episodes.

I thought it was pretty good, but it didn't grab me as it seems to have grabbed a lot of people. Maybe I just need to watch more. It was interesting, it just wasn't Firefly level interesting. I love the woman who play Calamity Jane, though. She's tremendous. I have the ( Read more... )

That's what I figured. It's hard to have a great story when you have to spend all the time establishing character. I expect it to pick up in an episode or two.

I like that I can claim some fame as the guy who got you to watch Firefly.

Though I'm sure it would have been someone else if not me.

Deadwood is awesome. It does take a few episodes to get into, but it's well worth it. May I also suggest Carnivale and Rome?

Yeah, both are highly recommended by some other people as well. I'll have to look into them and see if the plot looks interesting to me.

I found it slow to excite as well, but that is largely because it relies on the frontier context in the same way that Rome depended on the ancient world context and Firefly depended on the space exploration context. Very few of us have the same familiarity with the Black Hills or Comstock Load boom towns as we do with other settings. The language alone is enough to distance the viewer. It is also has much more intrigue riddled and far less clean. Firefly had characters that were mostly decent folk and almost predictable plot points - a psychic escapee, a job gone bad, an empire with a dirty secret ( ... )

I'm definitely feeling more into the show now, which is weird since not a lot has happened. The characterization is very good, however.
