Tutorials on T-shirt printing and stencils!

Part 1:

To begin with you need to decide on a stencil. There are many out there on line, but it is good to design your own. Actually doing this is a whole other ball game too. You need to be able to use Photoshop. For a great tutorial go here: stencils I will make my own when I have some spare time!

Part 2: Choose your weapons. I use a stencil brush and dylon fabric paints. These cost £1.50 and are available in just about every colour. The white tends to be thicker and gives the impression of screen-printing paint which is awesome and thick!

Part 3: Print the stencil onto freezer paper. Freezer paper is rough on one side (the side you print on) and smooth on the other which is why it sticks to your shirts to prevent leaks. Do a search for Freezer paper on google and you will find the nearest place to where you live that stock it.

Part 4: Cut the stencil out. I use a very sharp surgical knife and very sharp, very small scissors. Use a craft mat to cut this out on.

It takes some practice to get the hang of the knife, but it is worth using it especially for stencil like this:

Part 5: Put a mat inside your T-Shirt (the one you use to cut out with) to protect the other side of the shirt from paint and then iron your stencil (sticky side to material) for however long it takes to stick. Uusully 2 mins on a moderate to high setting.

Part 6: PAINT! Do not use too much paint on your brush or you will get bleed and blobs. Dry each layer with a hairdryer between layers and then heat seal each layer using some grease proof paper and iron on a very hot setting for 2 mins. I usually do 3 coats of paint. White needs at least 2 coats (use 3 to be safe and to cover the colour of the material).

Part 7: Let the last layer dry and then peel the freezer paper off carefully. Heat set the paint again for 2 mins, and when ready to wash do it inside out on a hand wash setting or 30 degree wash.

And there you have it!
