Bicycling and Pollution

I spent money today on an anti-pollution smog mask for bicycling, which is ridiculous because it's actually necessary. Every winter I have a hard time breathing while bicycling and eventually figured out that it was pollution smothering me. Mmm, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, black smoke... wee! This is one article, for example, that is just ( Read more... )

when paul and i lived in new york city we had perpetually runny noses all summer (and this with a raw, local, and/or organic vegan diet), our snot was black, and when our clothes got wet in the rain our skin became all itchy and irritated. it was actually kind of frightening.

You're kidding. That -is- frightening. It's never been that bad here. You and Paul need anti-pollution masks, big time. Maybe, one day, we can have bubbles around our bicycles, and detachable oxygen tanks!! Wee!

How is the anti-pollution smog mask working for ya? What kind did you get? I've ridden with resperators from home depot, but they don't facilitate enough flow volume of the airs that I desperately need, in my lungsbrain.

Well, I haven't received it yet, but I'm excited to. A respirator from Home Depot sounds kind of... suffocating. Look here: Respro Masks, but DO NOT buy masks from this site. You can find what you like (I picked the Sportsa Mask after reading some reviews, but the City Mask also looks great and is cheaper), then look for it somewhere else for much, much cheaper. I think that Amazon.com has an available Sportsa Mask, but I don't remember the price.

FYI, the Respro Bandit Mask got poor reviews, saying that it only "filters" basic dust and whatnot and would be suitable for a gardener, maybe... but not good for filtering what bicyclists need filtered.
